How to change rear springs / rear coil springs on TOYOTA LAND CRUISER PRADO 3 (J120) [AUTODOC]

Replacement: coil springs – Toyota Prado J120. Tools you need:

                        Wire brush
                      
                        WD-40 spray
                      
                        Copper grease 
                      
                        Combination spanner #12
                      
                        Combination spanner #14
                      
                        Drive socket # 17 
                      
                        Wheel impact socket #21
                      
                        Torque wrench
                      
                        Tap wrench
                      
                        Crow bar
                      
                        Hydraulic transmission jack
                      
                        Wheel chock

Replacement: coil springs – Toyota Prado J120. AUTODOC recommends:

Both coil springs of the rear suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right coil springs of the rear suspension.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Carry out replacement in the following order:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.

Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #21.
Step 3

Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Toyota Prado J120
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Support the rear suspension beam. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 7

Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #17. Use a tap wrench.
Step 8

Detach the lower part of the shock absorber. Use a crowbar.
Step 9

Clean the stabiliser link fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 10

Unscrew the fasteners connecting the stabilizer link to the rear suspension beam. Use a combination spanner #12. Use a combination spanner #14.
Step 11

Remove the mounting from under the rear axle beam.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Toyota Prado J120. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 12

Remove the stabiliser link from its mounting seat in the rear suspension beam.
Step 13

Pull down the rear suspension beam. Use a crowbar.
Step 14

Take out the spring.

Replacement: coil springs – Toyota Prado J120. Tip from AUTODOC:
Inspect the rubber mounts of the suspension spring. Replace if necessary.
Step 15

Clean the coil spring mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 16

Treat the mounting seats of the spring. Use copper grease.
Step 17

Pull down the rear suspension beam. Use a crowbar.
Step 18

Install the coil spring together with the rubber mounts into the mounting seats.
Step 19

Support the rear suspension beam. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 20

Ιnstall the transverse stabilizer link.
Step 21

Raise the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
Step 22

Screw in the fasteners connecting the stabilizer link to the rear suspension beam. Use a combination spanner #12. Use a combination spanner #14.
Step 23

Attach the lower part of the shock absorber.
Step 24

Screw in the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #17.
Step 25

Tighten the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 98 Nm torque.
Step 26

Remove the mounting from under the rear axle beam.

AUTODOC recommends:
Toyota Prado J120 – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
Step 27

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 28

Install the wheel.

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts. Toyota Prado J120
Step 29

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #21.
Step 30

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 112 nm torque.
Step 31

Remove the jacks and chocks.
