Replacement: front upper arm – Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon. AUTODOC recommends:
The replacement procedure is identical for the right and left upper control arms.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: front upper arm – Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon. Use the following procedure:
Step 1
Open the hood.
Step 2
Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 3
Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 4
Loosen the upper fastener of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 5
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 6
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 7
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 8
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
Replacement: front upper arm – Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon. Tip:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 9
Remove the wheel.
Step 10
Clean all joints of the arm. Clean the shock strut fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 11
Undo the fastening nut that attaches the stabilizer link to the shock absorber fork.
Use a drive socket #18.
Step 12
Remove the stabilizer rod.
Step 13
Unscrew the fastening bolt that connects the shock strut with the shock absorber fork. Use a drive socket #18. Use a tap wrench.
Step 14
Unscrew the fastening bolt that connects the shock absorber fork with the lower control arm.
Use a drive socket #21. Use a tap wrench.
Step 15
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 16
Clean the fastener that attaches the shock absorber fork to the shock strut.
Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 17
Detach the shock absorber fork from the shock strut.
Step 18
Unscrew the top fastening of the shock strut mount.
Replacement: front upper arm – Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon. AUTODOC experts recommend:
To avoid injuries, hold the shock strut when undoing the fastening bolts.
Step 19
Remove the suspension strut.
Step 20
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 21
Unscrew the fasteners of the ball joint. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 22
Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller.
Step 23
Clean the control arm fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 24
Unscrew the upper control arm fasteners (2 pieces). Use a drive socket #E18. Use a tap wrench.
Step 25
Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 26
Remove the arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 27
Clean the mounting seats and the thread of the suspension arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 28
Install a new arm.
Replacement: front upper arm – Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon. Tip from AUTODOC:
During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 29
Install the control arm fasteners.
Step 30
Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
Step 31
Screw the fasteners of the ball joint. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 32
Screw in the fastener of the upper control arm (2 pieces). Use a drive socket #E18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 33
Raise the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
Step 34
Tighten the ball joint fastener. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 45 Nm torque.
Step 35
Tighten the upper control arm fasteners (2 pieces). Use a drive socket #E18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 85 nm torque.
Step 36
Remove the support from under the arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: front upper arm – Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 37
Install the shock strut into the wheel arch.
Step 38
Screw the top fastening of the shock strut mount. Do not tighten it.
Replacement: front upper arm – Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon. Professionals recommend:
To avoid injuries, hold the shock strut when screwing the fastening bolts in.
Step 39
Clean the mounting seats of the shock absorber fork. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 40
Attach the shock absorber fork to the shock strut.
Step 41
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 42
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 43
Screw in the fastener connecting the shock absorber fork to the lower control arm.
Use a drive socket #21. Use a tap wrench.
Step 44
Tighten the fastening bolt that connects the shock strut with the shock absorber fork.
Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 77 Nm torque.
Step 45
Tighten the fastening bolt that connects the shock absorber fork to the lower control arm.
Use a drive socket #21. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 55 Nm torque.+45°
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 46
Ιnstall the transverse stabilizer link.
Step 47
Tighten the fastener connecting the stabilizer link with the shock absorber fork.
Use a combination spanner #18. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 60 Nm torque.
Step 48
Treat all joints of the arm. Treat the shock strut fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 49
Remove the support from under the arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
Step 50
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 51
Install the wheel.
Replacement: front upper arm – Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon. Tip from AUTODOC:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 52
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 53
Lower the car.
Step 54
Tighten the upper fastener of the shock absorber strut mount. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 44 Nm torque.
Step 55
Tighten the wheel bolts using a criss-cross pattern. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 56
Remove the jacks and chocks.
Step 57
Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 58
Close the hood.
