Replacement: strut mount – VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7). Tip from AUTODOC experts:
- The replacement procedure is identical for the mounts of the left and right shock struts of the front suspension.
- Be sure to replace all self-locking nuts and bolts during installation.
- Warning! Shut down the engine before starting any work – VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7).
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Secure the wheels with chocks.Step 2Open the bonnet.Step 3Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.Step 4Remove the wheel rim cover.
- Step 5Unscrew the hub lock nut. Use 1-3/16" drive 12-point socket.Replacement: strut mount – VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7). Tip from AUTODOC:Do not unscrew the fastener by more than 90 degrees.
- Step 6Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
- Step 7Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.Step 8Unscrew the wheel bolts.Replacement: strut mount – VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7). AUTODOC recommends:To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
- Step 9Remove the wheel.Step 10Disconnect the wiring and the brake hose from the bracket on the shock strut.
- Step 11Unscrew the fastener connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub. Use 1-3/16" drive 12-point socket.
- Step 12Clean the fasteners connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Clean the fasteners connecting the ball joint to the suspension control arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 13Unscrew the fastener connecting the ball joint to the suspension control arm. Use a drive socket #13.
- Step 14Disconnect the spherical joint from the arm.Step 15Pull the drive shaft out of the steering knuckle and lifting it, tie to the body.AUTODOC recommends:Make sure that the drive shaft is not unloaded (when the car is jacked).
- Step 16Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
- Step 17Unscrew the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 18Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.
- Step 19Release the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a special drive socket to remove the shock absorber.
- Step 20Disconnect the steering knuckle from the shock absorber strut.Replacement: strut mount – VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7). AUTODOC recommends:If necessary, use a rubber mallet.
- Step 21Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.Replacement: strut mount – VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7). Tip:Make sure that the steering knuckle is not released from load.
- Step 22Unscrew the upper fastening of the shock absorber strut. Use a combination spanner #21. Use HEX No.H6.AUTODOC recommends:Important! Hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7)
- Step 23Remove the suspension strut. Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.Replacement: strut mount – VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7). Professionals recommend:Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
- Step 24Compress the spring.
- Step 25Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use flare nut socket #22. Use HEX No.H6.
- Step 26Remove the shock strut mount.
- Step 27Clean the mounting seat of the shock strut mount. Use a wire brush.Step 28Install a new strut mount.
- Step 29Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use flare nut socket #22. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 60 Nm torque.Replacement: strut mount – VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7). AUTODOC experts recommend:Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
