Replacement: ball joint – VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7). Tip:

The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right ball joints.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Replacement: ball joint – VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7). Take the following steps:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.

Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3

Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.

Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7)
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Clean the ball joint fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7

Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #18.
Step 8

Loosen the fastener of the driveshaft. Use a drive socket #30. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 9

Remove the drive shaft. Use a pin punch. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 10

Clean the stabiliser link fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

Step 11

Unscrew the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the control arm. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 12

Remove the fastening bolt.

Step 13

Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller.
Step 14

Unscrew the fastener connecting the ball joint to the suspension control arm. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 15

Remove the fastening bolts.

Step 16

Remove the ball joint.
Step 17

Clean the ball joint mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 18

Install a new ball joint.

AUTODOC recommends:
Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 19

Attach the ball joint to the control arm.

Step 20

Install the fastening bolts.

Step 21

Tighten the fasteners connecting the ball joint to the control arm. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 20 Nm torque.+90°
Step 22

Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar.

Step 23

Tighten the ball joint fastener. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 20 Nm torque.+90°
Step 24

Install the rod fastening to the stabilizer and tighten it. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 15 Nm torque.+90°
Step 25

Mount the drive shaft into the wheel hub.

Step 26

Tighten the drive shaft nut. Use a drive socket #30. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 225 Nm torque.
Step 27

Treat the fasteners of the ball joint. Treat all joints of the stabiliser link. Use copper grease.
Step 28

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use high-temperature ceramic grease.
Step 29

Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: ball joint – VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7). After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 30

Install the wheel.

AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. VW NEW BEETLE Convertible (1Y7)
Step 31

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 32

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 nm torque.
Step 33

Remove the jacks and chocks.
