How to change strut mount on VW POLO 4 [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]
All the parts you need to replace – Strut Mount for POLO (9N_) and other VW models
Replacement: strut mount – VW Polo 9N. AUTODOC experts recommend:
All mounts of the front shock struts should be replaced simultaneously.
The replacement procedure is identical for the mounts of the left and right shock struts of the front suspension.
Be sure to replace all self-locking nuts and bolts during installation.
Please note: all work on the car – VW Polo 9N – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW Polo 9N
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean the stabiliser link fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Unscrew the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the shock strut. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 8
Remove the stabilizer rod.
Step 9
Disconnect the fastener of the ABS sensor cable from the shock absorber strut. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 10
Unscrew the brake hose fastening bracket from the shock strut. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 11
Detach the brake hose from the shock strut.
Step 12
Clean the fasteners connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 13
Unscrew the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #18. Use XZN #14. Use a tap wrench.
Step 14
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 15
Release the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
Step 16
Disconnect the steering knuckle from the shock absorber strut. Use a hammer.
Step 17
Lower the car.
Step 18
Open the hood.
Step 19
Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 20
Unscrew the top fastening of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW Polo 9N
Step 21
Remove the suspension strut.
Step 22
Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Polo 9N. Tip from AUTODOC:
Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
Step 23
Compress the spring.
Step 24
Treat the shock strut rod. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 25
Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a combination spanner #21. Use HEX No.H6. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 26
Remove the top strut mount. Use a flat screwdriver.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Polo 9N. AUTODOC recommends:
Examine the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop. Replace them if necessary.
Step 27
Install a new strut mount.
Step 28
Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a combination spanner #21. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 60 Nm torque.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Polo 9N. Tip:
Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
Step 29
Decompress the spring.
Step 30
Remove the assembled shock strut.
Step 31
Install the shock strut into the wheel arch.
AUTODOC recommends:
VW Polo 9N – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 32
Tighten the upper fastener of the shock absorber strut mount. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 15 Nm torque.+90°
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 33
Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 34
Close the hood.
Step 35
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 36
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 37
Treat the shock strut mounting seat on the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 38
Fix the shock absorber strut on the steering knuckle.
Step 39
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 40
Remove the support from under the arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
VW Polo 9N – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
Step 41
Tighten the lower fasteners connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #18. Use XZN #14. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 60 Nm torque.+90°
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 42
Fasten the brake hose on the strut.
Step 43
Tighten the brake hose fastening bracket to the shock strut. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 44
Connect the fastener of the ABS sensor cable to the shock absorber strut. Use water pump pliers.
Step 45
Ιnstall the transverse stabilizer link.
Step 46
Tighten the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the shock strut. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 40 Nm torque.
Step 47
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 48
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: strut mount – VW Polo 9N. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 49
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. VW Polo 9N
Step 50
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 51
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 52
Remove the jacks and chocks.
