How to change front suspension arm on CITROËN BERLINGO M [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]
All the parts you need to replace – Control Arm for Berlingo / Berlingo First Van (M_) and other CITROËN models
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right lower control arms.
Please note: all work on the car – Citroën Berlingo M – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 3
Raise the car.
AUTODOC recommends:
If you are using a jack, make sure it rests on a flat surface without any unevenness.Be sure to additionally secure the car with jack stands.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
Replacement: front lower arm – Citroën Berlingo M. Tip from AUTODOC:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean the fastener of the driveshaft. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Remove the cotter pin. Use a crowbar.
Step 8
Remove the circlip.
Step 9
Unscrew the fastener connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub. Use a drive socket #36. Use a tap wrench.
Step 10
Remove the fastening nut.
Step 11
Loosen the CV axle in the wheel hub. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
Step 12
Clean the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 13
Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 14
Unscrew the fastener connecting the ball joint to the suspension control arm. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 15
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 16
Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: front lower arm – Citroën Berlingo M. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 17
Release the fastener that connects the control arm ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar. Use a hammer.
Step 18
Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar.
Step 19
Detach the driveshaft from the steering knuckle.
Replacement: front lower arm – Citroën Berlingo M. Professionals recommend:
Make sure that the drive shaft is not unloaded (when the car is jacked).
Step 20
Clean the fastener that connects the suspension arm to the subframe. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 21
Unscrew the front arm fastener. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 22
Clean the fasteners connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 23
Unscrew the rear fasteners of the suspension arm. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 24
Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 25
Remove the arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 26
Clean the suspension arm mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 27
Install a new arm.
Replacement: front lower arm – Citroën Berlingo M. AUTODOC recommends:
During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 28
Install the fastening bolts.
Step 29
Screw in the fastening bolts. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #13. Use a drive socket #16. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 30
Clean the splines of the drive shaft CV joint. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 31
Install the steering knuckle on the CV axle.
Step 32
Treat the ball joint fastener. Use copper grease.
Step 33
Release the fastener that connects the control arm ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
Step 34
Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
Step 35
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 36
Tighten the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 40 Nm torque.
Step 37
Tighten the rear fastener of the control arm. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 35 Nm torque.
Step 38
Tighten the rear fastener of the control arm. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 90 Nm torque.
Step 39
Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Replacement: front lower arm – Citroën Berlingo M. AUTODOC experts recommend:
For tightening the fasteners correctly, you have to jack up the suspension components to their working position.
Step 40
Tighten the front fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 95 Nm torque.
Step 41
Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.
AUTODOC recommends:
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging assemblies and mechanisms.
Step 42
Install the fastening nut.
Step 43
Screw the nut of the drive shaft.
Step 44
Tighten the drive shaft nut. Use a drive socket #36. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 320 Nm torque.
Step 45
Restake the fastener of the driveshaft. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
Step 46
Treat all joints of the arm. Use copper grease.
Step 47
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush.
Step 48
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use ceramic grease.
Step 49
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: front lower arm – Citroën Berlingo M. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 50
Install the wheel.

Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Citroën Berlingo M
Step 51
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 52
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 90 Nm torque.
Step 53
Remove the jacks and chocks.
