Switch-Tronic is a name for the function of manual gear shifting on Alpina cars equipped with automatic transmissions. It was registered in 1992. When the Switch-Tronic technology appeared, it became revolutionary as it was the first to offer manual control for automatic gearboxes installed on mass production vehicles. Today, the car manufacturer actively uses it on its models, as Switch-Tronic is not only about the possibility to shift gears manually, but also about special firmware adapted to engine capabilities and driver’s needs.
Operating principle
Switch-Tronic is based on the automatic transmission with a classic design that includes a torque converter and planetary gear sets. Special firmware allows the transmission to operate in several modes. By default, it is adjusted for comfortable driving. If necessary, the driver can switch to the sport mode where gears are shifted at higher RPMs and faster. The manual mode is designed for even more dynamic driving. It ensures instant gear shifting. The transmission in the manual mode can be conveniently controlled with the help of paddle shifters.
