Peugeot 2008 Tears To Avoid PEUGEOT 2008 Estate (CU_) (03.2013 - ...)

I’m looking to buy a used Peugeot 2008 and want to make sure I avoid any known problematic years.

Are there specific model years that tend to have more issues, or perhaps some to definitely steer clear of?

Any advice on what to look out for, or years that are considered particularly reliable, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

When buying a used Peugeot 2008, especially from the first generation (2013–2019), there are several model years and issues to be aware of to avoid common problems and costly repairs.

Model Years to Be Cautious About
    - 2013 to 2016 (pre-facelift first generation): These years are known for a jerky automatic gearbox that is a design flaw rather than a fixable fault, so if you want an automatic, it's better to choose a post-facelift model or a manual transmission to avoid this issue.
    - 2014 to 2015: Several recalls affected cars built between January 2014 and July 2015 due to fuel leaks from high-pressure fuel rails, fuel injector lines, and faulty non-return valves in the fuel tank. These recalls should have been addressed by dealers, but always verify with the dealer or DVSA recall checker before purchase.
    - 2013 to 2014: Some models had front suspension mounting bolts that could break or were not tightened correctly, leading to suspension recalls. Again, ensure these recalls were completed.

    Common Problems to Watch For
    - 1.2L PureTech Petrol Engine: This engine requires diligent maintenance, especially regular oil changes and timely wet timing belt replacements. The wet belt runs inside the engine oil and can deteriorate prematurely, causing severe engine damage if neglected. A full service history confirming these maintenance tasks is essential.
    - Diesel Models: Diesel variants often suffer from diesel particulate filter (DPF) issues, especially if the car is used mainly for short trips that prevent the DPF from self-cleaning. Fuel contamination of the oil system can occur if the DPF cleaning cycle is interrupted, potentially damaging the engine.
    - Electrical and Sensor Issues: Diesel models in particular have reported faulty sensors, warning lights, and electrical problems that can be expensive to fix.
    - Air Conditioning Problems: Refrigerant leaks, compressor failures, and faulty wiring connectors have been reported, so check the AC system thoroughly.

    - Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Faults: Some owners have experienced false warning lights due to sensor or wiring faults.
    - Starter Motor and Fuel System: Some 2016 models had starter motor overheating issues and fuel system actuator faults, which may require inspection and repair.

    Reliability Overview
    - The Peugeot 2008 has a mixed reliability record, with petrol models generally receiving fewer complaints than diesel ones.
    - Out-of-warranty repairs can be costly, and dealer service quality varies widely.
    - The car scored a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating in 2013, making it a safe choice if well maintained.

    Recommendations
    - Prefer post-facelift models (2016 onwards) or well-maintained manuals to avoid gearbox issues.
    - Avoid diesel versions if your driving is mostly short urban trips to reduce DPF problems.
    - Ensure the car has a full service history, especially for timing belt and oil changes on PureTech engines.
    - Check for completed recalls related to fuel leaks and suspension.
    - Have a trusted mechanic inspect the car for electrical, suspension, and fuel system issues before purchase.

In summary, while the Peugeot 2008 offers stylish design and practicality, the 2013–2016 models have some known issues, especially with the automatic gearbox, fuel system recalls, and engine maintenance needs. Later models and petrol versions tend to be more reliable. Proper maintenance and recall compliance are key to a trouble-free ownership experience.
