i20 cranks but doesn't fire. Eventually does fire when trying again later but slowly (video) HYUNDAI i20 (PB, PBT)

Hyundai i20 intermittently hard to start. Happened three times in 7 months now. Last two times after cold snaps. Battery was replaced after second time this happened. Early in the morning, the engine will crank but no sign of ignition. Even a battery starter pack changes nothing. Once I’ve ruled out the battery (by charging it back to full) it then does slowly turn over, increasing in rate until its fast enough to fire (foot down on gas pedal). Once this has happened the air smells of fuel but from then on will start with no problem at all.

This is a video of me finally being able to get it to ignite https://photos.app.goo.gl/8rQvxPfGMk2Zuu9e8

Multimeter shows alternator and battery are fine (measured after car has been off for hours). Battery wasn’t replaced the first time as it just started working on its own after we came back to the car hours later.

Hopefully someone has experience of this as we can’t trust it for work any more!

Thanks!

Tim

I think something is not in the fuel system or in the ignition system. I am more inclined to the fact that the injectors do not hold fuel and they need to be replaced. The battery is in good condition.

Hello, did you manage to find the problem?

Great video, mate! Your i20's starting issues sound like a right pain. Have you checked the fuel injectors? They might be playing hide and seek with your fuel. Also, give the crankshaft position sensor a look - it could be on strike. If all else fails, maybe your ECM's having a bit of an identity crisis. Time for a professional to sort it out before you end up stranded in the middle of nowhere during the next cold snap!

Blimey, that's a tricky one! Had a similar issue with my old Hyundai i30. Turned out the spark plugs were knackered. Might be worth giving them a once-over. Also, check if your fuel pressure's up to snuff - could be your pump's feeling a bit lazy. Good luck, mate!

Sounds like you're in a right pickle with that i20! Have you considered it might be the ignition coil? My cousin's i10 had a similar tantrum, and replacing the coil sorted it right out. Might be worth a gander. Keep us posted on how it goes!

Cor blimey, what a headache! My two pence: give the fuel system a thorough check. Could be your injectors are having a laugh, or maybe the fuel pump's on its last legs. If that doesn't do the trick, might be time to have a chat with a mechanic. Better safe than sorry, eh?

Oi, that's a proper conundrum you've got there! Have you tried giving the ECM a stern talking to? In all seriousness, though, it might be worth getting that checked out. These modern cars with their fancy computers can be right temperamental sometimes. Fingers crossed you get it sorted soon!
