Not always common on vans of that era, but hey, yours came from the âfancy brakesâ department!
Hereâs the quirky bit: even though your vanâs got rear discs, the handbrake usually doesnât use the main pads. Instead, itâs got a little set of mini drum brakes hidden inside the rear disc "hat"âthink of it as brake inception (âdrums inside discs, mate!â). So when you pull the handbrake, it actually operates these tiny drum shoes, not the main disc pads.
To find the mechanism, have a look behind your rear wheels at the brake discs. Youâll spot cables running to the back of the caliper areaâthatâs your handbrake cable. The cable pulls on a lever, which works those hidden shoes in the discâs centre section.
If you ever need to work on it or adjust it, youâll need to:
- Whip off the rear wheel.
- Remove the main caliper and disc (get ready for a bit of persuasionâthey love to stick after a few years).
- Underneath, youâll find those sneaky drum shoes and the handbrake gubbins inside.
The cable adjustment can usually be done inside the van or from the cableâs balancing bar underneath, but if your actual handbrake isn't biting much, could be worn shoes or the mechanismâs got gunked up.
So, bottom line: Your handbrakeâs living its own little life inside your rear discs. Bit of a faff to get at, but at least itâs not made of string and good intentions! And if you need to explain it to someone: âyeah, it stops with disco drums, mate.â
Hope you keep those Expert stops, well... expert!
