How to change spark plug on VW POLO 4 (9N) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]
All the parts you need to replace – Spark Plug for POLO (9N_) and other VW models
Replacement: spark plugs – VW Polo 9N. AUTODOC recommends:
The replacement procedure is the same for all spark plugs.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: spark plugs – VW Polo 9N. Recommended sequence of steps:
Step 1
Open the hood.
Step 2
Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 3
Detach the crankcase ventilation hose from the engine cover at the left.
Step 4
Remove the engine cover. The air filter housing is integrated into the engine cover.
Replacement: spark plugs – VW Polo 9N. Tip:
Raise the engine cover, holding it on two sides simultaneously.
Step 5
Cover the throttle body with a microfibre towel to prevent dust and dirt from getting into the system.
Step 6
Detach the crankcase ventilation hose from the oil filler neck.
Step 7
Unscrew the oil filler neck.
Step 8
Remove the oil filler neck.
Step 9
Cover the oil filler opening with a microfibre towel to prevent dirt and foreign objects from getting into the system.
Step 10
Undo the plastic locking tabs of the ignition coil connector. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 11
Pry up the ignition coil. Use a crowbar (2 pieces).
Step 12
Take out the ignition coil from the spark plug well.
Replacement: spark plugs – VW Polo 9N. AUTODOC experts recommend:
Remember the sequence of steps for ignition coil demounting.
Step 13
Clean dirt, dust and debris from inside the spark plug wells.
Step 14
Unscrew the spark plugs. Use the spark plug socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 15
Take out the spark plugs. Use the spark plug socket #16.
Step 16
Apply a thin layer of a special high temperature anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the new spark plugs.
Step 17
Install the new spark plugs into their mounting seats. Use the spark plug socket #16.
Step 18
Screw new spark plugs and tighten them. Use the spark plug socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 25 nm torque.
Replacement: spark plugs – VW Polo 9N. AUTODOC recommends:
Don't tighten the plugs with excessive force. Exceeding tightening torque can damage the thread connection. Be careful when working with a spark plug wrench. Its skewing can cause damage to the threaded connection.
Step 19
Treat the ignition coil tip. Use high-temperature grease.
Step 20
Install the ignition coils to the spark plug wells. Make sure you hear a click indicating that it is locked in place.

Replacement: spark plugs – VW Polo 9N. Follow the installation steps.
Step 21
Lock the connector.
Step 22
Remove the microfibre towel from the oil filler opening.
Step 23
Install the oil filler neck.
Step 24
Screw in the oil filler neck.
Step 25
Attach the crankcase ventilation hose to the oil filler neck.
Step 26
Remove the microfibre towel from the throttle body.
Step 27
Install the engine cover and secure it. Make sure you hear a click indicating that it is locked in place.
Replacement: spark plugs – VW Polo 9N. Professionals recommend:
Make sure the engine cover is properly seated. It should not be displaced with respect to the guiding fasteners and the throttle body air intake hose.Do not apply excessive force when installing the part. Otherwise you may damage the fasteners.
Step 28
Attach the crankcase ventilation hose to the engine cover at the left.
Step 29
Run the engine for a few minutes. This is necessary in order to make sure that the component operates properly.
Step 30
Shut off the engine.
Step 31
Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 32
Close the hood.
