How to change rear wheel bearing / rear hub bearing and wheel hub on AUDI A3 1 (8L1)
All the parts you need to replace – Wheel Bearing for A3 Hatchback (8L1) and other AUDI models
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A3 8L1. AUTODOC experts recommend:
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right wheel hubs on the same axle.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A3 8L1. Use the following procedure:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Audi A3 8L1
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Spread the brake pads. Use a crowbar.
Step 7
Unscrew the brake caliper fastening. Use a combination spanner #13. Use a combination spanner #15.
Step 8
Remove the brake caliper.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A3 8L1. Tip:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur.
Step 9
Remove the brake pads.
Step 10
Unscrew the brake disc mounting bolts and remove it. Use Torx T30.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A3 8L1. AUTODOC recommends:
If necessary, use a rubber mallet.
Step 11
Pry up and remove the wheel hub cap. Use a crowbar.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A3 8L1. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
If necessary, use a flat chisel and a hammer.
Step 12
Unscrew the wheel hub fastening nut. Use drive 12-point socket #32.
Step 13
Clean the hub. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 14
Remove the hub and the bearing together, since they are a sealed unit. Use 3-Arm Gear Puller.
Step 15
Clean the guiding part of the stub axle. Use a wire brush.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A3 8L1. Tip from AUTODOC:
Be careful to avoid damaging the guiding part of the stub axle.
Step 16
Clean the hub bearing mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 17
Apply special grease to the bearing assembly mounting seat.
Step 18
Install the new wheel hub with a bearing.
Step 19
Move the hub as far as it can go.
Step 20
Screw the wheel hub lock nut.
Step 21
Tighten the hub. Important! Be sure to use new fasteners. Use drive 12-point socket #32. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 70 Nm torque.+45°
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A3 8L1. Professionals recommend:
The wheel bearing unit must not tilt on the axle pin.
Step 22
Install the cap of the hub nut.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A3 8L1. Tip from AUTODOC:
The cap must always be replaced. When you install the previously used cap the sealing will be lost.
Step 23
Apply some copper grease to the hub where it contacts the brake disk.
Step 24
Install the brake disc.
Step 25
Tighten the brake disc fastening. Use Torx T30. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 4 Nm torque.
Step 26
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A3 8L1. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 27
Install the brake pads.
Step 28
Install the brake caliper and fix it.
Step 29
Tighten the brake caliper bracket. Use a combination spanner #15. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 35 Nm torque.
Step 30
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 31
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Audi A3 8L1
Step 32
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 33
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 34
Remove the jacks and chocks.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A3 8L1. AUTODOC experts recommend:
Without starting the engine, press the brake pedal several times until you feel significant resistance.
