How to change upper rear suspension arm on MERCEDES-BENZ M W163 TUTORIAL | AUTODOC
All the parts you need to replace – Control Arm for M-Class (W163) and other MERCEDES-BENZ models
Replacement: rear upper arm – Mercedes ML W163. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
The replacement procedure is identical for the right and left upper control arms.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: rear upper arm – Mercedes ML W163. Use the following procedure:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Mercedes ML W163
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Unscrew the ABS sensor fastening from the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 7
Clean the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 8
Unscrew the top fastening of the ball joint. Use a combination spanner #19.
Step 9
Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a hammer.
Step 10
Remove the shock strut mount cap. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 11
Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 12
Loosen the upper fastener of the shock strut mount. Use a combination spanner #13. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 13
Clean the stabiliser link fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 14
Unscrew the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the control arm. Use a combination spanner #13 (2 pieces).
Step 15
Unscrew the fasteners connecting the stabiliser link to the stabiliser bar. Use a combination spanner #13.
Step 16
Unscrew the front arm fastener. Use a combination spanner #18 (2 pieces).
Step 17
Remove the fastening bolt. Use a hammer.
Step 18
Unscrew the rear fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #18 (2 pieces).
Step 19
Unscrew the lower arm fastening. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a drive socket #21. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 20
Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 21
Detach the lower control arm.
Step 22
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 23
Remove the upper control arm.
Step 24
Clean the mounting seats and the thread of the suspension arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 25
Install a new upper control arm.
Replacement: rear upper arm – Mercedes ML W163. Professionals recommend:
During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.Do not damage the ball joint cover.Position the control arm according to its mounting holes.
Step 26
Install the fastening bolts.
Step 27
Attach the lower control arm. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 28
Install the fastening bolts. Use a hammer.
Step 29
Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
Step 30
Screw the fasteners of the ball joint. Use a combination spanner #19.
Step 31
Tighten the upper fastener of the shock absorber strut mount. Use a combination spanner #13. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 20 Nm torque.
Step 32
Install the shock strut mount cap.
Step 33
Tighten the top fastening of the ball joint. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 50 Nm torque.
Step 34
Screw in the fastener that connects the ABS sensor to the rear knuckle.
Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 35
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 36
Tighten the lower arm fastening. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a drive socket #21. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 135 Nm torque.
Step 37
Tighten the rear fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #18 (2 pieces). Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 38
Tighten the front fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #18 (2 pieces). Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 39
Remove the support from under the arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: rear upper arm – Mercedes ML W163. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 40
Tighten the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the stabilizer bar. Use a combination spanner #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 28 Nm torque.
Step 41
install the rod fastening to the stabilizer and tighten it. Use a combination spanner #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 28 Nm torque.
Step 42
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 43
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
Replacement: rear upper arm – Mercedes ML W163. Tip from AUTODOC:
After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 44
Install the wheel.

Important! Hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts. Mercedes ML W163
Step 45
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 46
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 150 nm torque.
Step 47
Remove the jacks and chocks.
