DIY Mercedes-Benz E-Class repair and maintenance

Engine

  • Valve train of petrol engines in W212 cars is hardly reliable: a drive chain gets stretched quickly and the camshaft adjusters jam. The engine running comes with foreign sounds. Replace the parts as soon as possible and do not ignore their scheduled inspection at a car repair shop.
  • An oil filter of W212 cars leaks. This mostly happens in winter. You can recognise the issue by oil leaking from under the filter. If this is the case, replace the component to eliminate the problem. Change engine oil as well. Download our illustrated PDF manual on Mercedes-Benz E-Class repair and do it yourself.
  • A cylinder head in 3-litre diesel engine installed in W124 cars is sensitive to overheating. The first part to wear out is a cylinder head gasket. Its failure leads to the engine oil leakage. The problem can be eliminated by installing a new gasket at a car repair shop. Specialists will also inspect the unit and determine whether the cylinder head requires grinding.

Transmission

  • W210 and W212 cars owners face the automatic transmission gear wheel failure due to overheating. The vehicle jerks and skids while driving. You can avoid this by regularly replacing transmission oil and a filter. Watch our step-by-step video tutorial on Mercedes-Benz E-Class repair and do it in your garage at least every 60,000 kilometres.
  • If the electronic control board in the automatic transmission of W212 cars short-circuits, the mechanism switches to the limp mode and stops shifting some gears. In this case, the unit should be restored at a car repair shop.

Body

  • Paintwork of W124 and W210 cars peels near the lower parts of the doors, boot lid, fenders and sills. Our tip to extend lifespan of body parts is not to use aggressive detergents. You can also apply a transparent protection film to the most vulnerable areas. Simplify your work by having downloaded our step-by-step manual on Mercedes-Benz E-Class repair and operation for free.
  • The headlamp housings get crack. They can hardly withstand hitting rocks and intense car wash. Minor defects can be removed by polishing. If visibility impairs due to damages when you switch on the dipped beam at night, you should install new components. Watch our video tutorial to do Mercedes-Benz E-Class repair and maintenance yourself.
