How to change rear springs on VW SHARAN 1 [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

Replacement: coil springs – VW Sharan 1. Tools you need:

Both coil springs of the rear suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right coil springs of the rear suspension.
Please note: all work on the car – VW Sharan 1 – should be done with the engine switched off.

Carry out replacement in the following order:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.

Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 3

Raise the car.

Replacement: coil springs – VW Sharan 1. Tip:
If you are using a jack, make sure it rests on a flat surface without any unevenness.Be sure to additionally secure the car with jack stands.
Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW Sharan 1
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Clean the lower shock absorber fastener. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7

Support the rear knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 8

Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a drive socket #21. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 9

Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 10

Lower the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.

Step 11

Clean the fasteners that connect the sway bar to the suspension arms. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 12

Unscrew the fasteners that connect the sway bar to the suspension arms. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 13

Move the sway bar aside.
Step 14

Remove the support from under the rear knuckle.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – VW Sharan 1. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 15

Take out the spring.
Step 16

Remove the rubber mounts of the spring.
Step 17

Clean the coil spring mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 18

Install the coil spring together with the rubber mounts into the mounting seats.
Step 19

Support the rear knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 20

Clean the sway bar mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 21

Install the sway bar and fasten it.
Step 22

Tighten the fasteners that connect the sway bar to the suspension arms. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 35 Nm torque.
Step 23

Install the fastening bolt.

Replacement: coil springs – VW Sharan 1. Tip from AUTODOC:
For tightening the fasteners correctly, you have to jack up the suspension components to their working position.
Step 24

Tighten the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a drive socket #21. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 130 Nm torque.
Step 25

Remove the support from under the rear knuckle.

AUTODOC recommends:
VW Sharan 1 – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
Step 26

Treat the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use copper grease.
Step 27

Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush.
Step 28

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use ceramic grease.
Step 29

Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – VW Sharan 1. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 30

Install the wheel.

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts. VW Sharan 1
Step 31

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 32

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 170 Nm torque.
Step 33

Remove the jacks and chocks.
