- Both coil springs of the rear suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
- The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right coil springs of the rear suspension.
- All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W169. Take the following steps:
- Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks. - Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. - Step 3Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W169. AUTODOC recommends:To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts. - Step 5
Remove the wheel. - Step 6
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack. - Step 7Clean the shock absorber fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.Step 8
Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench. - Step 9Remove the fastening bolt. Use a crowbar.Step 10
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.AUTODOC recommends:Mercedes W169 – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car. - Step 11
Disconnect the ABS sensor wiring. Use a flat screwdriver. - Step 12
Remove the support from under the arm.AUTODOC recommends:Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W169. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms. - Step 13Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.Step 14
Unscrew the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a drive socket #19. Use a ratchet wrench. - Step 15
Remove the fastening bolt. - Step 16Detach the suspension arm from the rear knuckle. Use a crowbar.Step 17
Remove the spring. Use a crowbar.Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W169. Professionals recommend:Examine suspension spring rubber spacers. Replace them if needed. - Step 18
Clean the coil spring mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray. - Step 19
Install the coil spring together with the rubber mounts into the mounting seats. Use a crowbar. - Step 20
Clean the mounting seats and the thread of the suspension arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
