Replacement: wheel bearing – VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD). Tip from AUTODOC experts:

Do not re-use the bearing assembly of your VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD) car.
The wheel hub bearing replacement procedure is identical for both wheels on the same axle.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Replacement: wheel bearing – VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD). Use the following procedure:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.

Step 3

Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.

Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

Replacement: wheel bearing – VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD). AUTODOC recommends:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Loosen the tension of the torsion bars. Use a combination spanner #24.
Step 7

Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

Step 8

Spread the brake pads. Use a flat screwdriver.

Step 9

Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a drive socket #21. Use a tap wrench. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 10

Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.

Replacement: wheel bearing – VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD). Tip:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur. Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
Step 11

Clean the brake disc fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 12

Unscrew the brake disc fastening. Use HEX No.H6. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 13

Remove the brake disc.
Step 14

Unscrew the wheel hub axle nut. Use a drive socket #27.
Step 15

Clean the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

Step 16

Unscrew the top fastening of the ball joint. Use a combination spanner #24.
Step 17

Unscrew the lower ball joint fastening from the steering knuckle. Use XZN #14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 18

Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle.

Step 19

Clean the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 20

Unscrew the end fastening nut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #19. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
Step 21

Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller. Use a hammer.
Step 22

Remove the steering knuckle together with the hub. Use a crowbar.
Step 23

Press the wheel hub out from the tapered roller bearing. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use a hammer.
Step 24

Remove the retaining ring. Use circlip pliers.
Step 25

Press out the wheel hub bearing. Use a bush and bearing driver set.

AUTODOC recommends:
Apply special grease to the bearing assembly mounting seat.
Step 26

Press the new bearing in the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set.

Step 27

Install the retaining ring in the steering knuckle. Use circlip pliers.
Step 28

Press the wheel hub into the bearing inner race. Use a bush and bearing driver set.
Step 29

Install the steering knuckle with a hub in assembly.
Step 30

Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 31

Tighten the lower fastening of the ball joint. Use XZN #14. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 55 Nm torque.+90°

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 32

Tighten the hub. Use a drive socket #27. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 150 Nm torque.+90°

Replacement: wheel bearing – VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD). Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 33

Tighten the top fastening of the ball joint. Use a combination spanner #24. Use a crowbar. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 110 nm torque.
Step 34

Install the brake disc.
Step 35

Tighten the brake disc fastening. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 5 nm torque.
Step 36

Install the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Step 37

Tighten the brake caliper bracket. Use a drive socket #21. Use a tap wrench. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 180 nm torque.
Step 38

Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
Step 39

Tighten the fastening nut connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 40 nm torque.
Step 40

Tighten the tension of the torsion bars.
Step 41

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.

Step 42

Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.

Replacement: wheel bearing – VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD). AUTODOC recommends:
After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 43

Install the wheel.

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts. VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD)
Step 44

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.

Step 45

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 160 Nm torque.

Step 46

Remove the jacks and chocks.
