Replacement: wheel bearing – VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD). Tip from AUTODOC experts:
- Do not re-use the bearing assembly of your VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD) car.
- The wheel hub bearing replacement procedure is identical for both wheels on the same axle.
- All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: wheel bearing – VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD). Use the following procedure:
- Step 1Secure the wheels with chocks.
- Step 2Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.Step 3Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.Step 4Unscrew the wheel bolts.Replacement: wheel bearing – VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD). AUTODOC recommends:To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
- Step 5Remove the wheel.
- Step 6Loosen the tension of the torsion bars. Use a combination spanner #24.
- Step 7Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.Step 8Spread the brake pads. Use a flat screwdriver.Step 9Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a drive socket #21. Use a tap wrench. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 10Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.Replacement: wheel bearing – VW TRANSPORTER IV Platform/Chassis (70XD). Tip:Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur. Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
- Step 11Clean the brake disc fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 12Unscrew the brake disc fastening. Use HEX No.H6. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 13Remove the brake disc.
- Step 14Unscrew the wheel hub axle nut. Use a drive socket #27.
- Step 15Clean the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.Step 16Unscrew the top fastening of the ball joint. Use a combination spanner #24.
- Step 17Unscrew the lower ball joint fastening from the steering knuckle. Use XZN #14. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 18Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle.Step 19Clean the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 20Unscrew the end fastening nut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #19. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
- Step 21Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller. Use a hammer.
- Step 22Remove the steering knuckle together with the hub. Use a crowbar.
- Step 23Press the wheel hub out from the tapered roller bearing. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use a hammer.
- Step 24Remove the retaining ring. Use circlip pliers.
- Step 25Press out the wheel hub bearing. Use a bush and bearing driver set.AUTODOC recommends:Apply special grease to the bearing assembly mounting seat.
- Step 26Press the new bearing in the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set.Step 27Install the retaining ring in the steering knuckle. Use circlip pliers.
