Do not re-use the bearing assembly of your Audi A4 B5 saloon car.
The wheel hub bearing replacement procedure is identical for both wheels on the same axle.
Please note: all work on the car – Audi A4 B5 saloon – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Open the bonnet. Unscrew the brake fluid reservoir cap.
Step 2
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 3
Loosen the fastener of the driveshaft. Use HEX No.H14. Use a tap wrench.
Step 4
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 5
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 6
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Audi A4 B5 saloon
Step 7
Remove the wheel.
Step 8
Spread the brake pads. Use a crowbar.
Step 9
Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 10
Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
Step 11
Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Professionals recommend:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur.Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
Step 12
Remove the brake disc.
Step 13
Remove the fastening bolt. Use HEX No.H14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 14
Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 15
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 16
Unscrew the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 17
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 18
Remove the control arms.
Step 19
Detach the driveshaft from the steering knuckle.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Tip from AUTODOC:
Make sure that the drive shaft is not unloaded (when the car is jacked).
Step 20
Install the control arms.
Step 21
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 22
Clean the hub bearing mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 23
Remove the wheel hub from the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use the hub slide hammer puller.
Step 24
Clean the hub bearing mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 25
Press out the wheel hub bearing. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use the bearing puller.
Step 26
Remove the bearing inner race from the wheel hub. Use a bearing separator. Use 3-Arm Gear Puller.
Step 27
Clean the hub. Use a wire brush.
Step 28
Clean the hub bearing mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 29
Press the new bearing in the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set.
Check to make sure the wheel hub bearing is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment. Stop pressing on the surface of the bearing immediately after it has been fitted into its mounting seat.
Step 30
Install the wheel hub on the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use the bearing puller.
Step 31
Remove the fastening bolt. Use a crowbar.
Step 32
Remove the control arms.
Step 33
Install the drive shaft.
Step 34
Install the control arms.
Step 35
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 36
Tighten the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 40 Nm torque.
Step 37
Install and tighten the drive shaft bolt. Use HEX No.H14.
Step 38
Clean the hub. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 39
Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 40
Install the brake disc.
Step 41
Install the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Step 42
Tighten the brake caliper bracket. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 125 Nm torque.
Step 43
Treat all joints of the arm. Treat the steering knuckle fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 44
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush.
Step 45
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 46
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A4 B5 saloon. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 47
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Audi A4 B5 saloon
Step 48
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 49
Lower the car.
Step 50
Tighten the bolt connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub. Use HEX No.H14. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 115 Nm torque.+180°
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 51
Tighten the wheel bolts using a criss-cross pattern. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 52
Remove the jacks and chocks.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Tip from AUTODOC:
Without starting the engine, press the brake pedal several times until you feel significant resistance.Check the brake fluid level in the expansion tank and top up if necessary.
Step 53
Tighten the brake fluid reservoir cap. Close the hood.
