How to change a front shock strut on RENAULT SCENIC 2 (JM) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

Replacement: suspension strut – Renault Scenic 2. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
- Both shock struts of the front suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
- The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right shock struts of the front suspension.
- All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: suspension strut – Renault Scenic 2. Use the following procedure:
- Step 1Open the bonnet.
- Step 2Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
- Step 3Unscrew the fastener of the wiper cowl grille located on the left side. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 4Remove the rubber strip.
- Step 5Remove the wiper cowl grille located on the left side.
- Step 6Unscrew the fastener of the wiper cowl grille located on the right side. Use Torx T20.
- Step 7Raise a little the wiper cowl grille located on the right side.
- Step 8Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 9Loosen the upper fastener of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 10Secure the wheels with chocks.
- Step 11Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
- Step 12Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
- Step 13Unscrew the wheel bolts.Replacement: suspension strut – Renault Scenic 2. AUTODOC recommends:To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
- Step 14Remove the wheel.
- Step 15Clean the fasteners connecting the stabiliser link to the shock strut, and those connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.Step 16Unscrew the nut and remove the stabilizer rod from the shock strut. Use a drive socket #17.
- Step 17Disconnect the wiring and the brake hose from the bracket on the shock strut. Use a crowbar.
- Step 18Unscrew the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #18. Use a tap wrench.
- Step 19Remove the fastening bolt.Step 20Clean the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 21Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 22Remove the fastening bolt.
- Step 23Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar.
- Step 24Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
- Step 25Release the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a special drive socket to remove the shock absorber. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 26Disconnect the steering knuckle from the shock absorber strut. Use a hammer. Use a flat metal-working chisel.
- Step 27Unscrew the top fastening of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.Replacement: suspension strut – Renault Scenic 2. AUTODOC experts recommend:To avoid injuries, hold the shock strut when undoing the fastening bolts.
- Step 28Remove the suspension strut.
- Step 29Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.Replacement: suspension strut – Renault Scenic 2. Tip from AUTODOC:Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
- Step 30Compress the spring.
- Step 31Treat the shock strut rod. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 32Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a combination spanner #19. Use HEX No.H6.
- Step 33Remove the top strut mount.
- Step 34Release the coil spring.
- Step 35Remove the spring.
- Step 36Remove the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop.
- Step 37Remove the old shock absorber from the hydraulic coil spring compressor.Replacement: suspension strut – Renault Scenic 2. Tip from AUTODOC experts:Τhoroughly examine the shock absorber mount, dust boot, bump stop. Replace them if necessary.Before installing a new shock absorber you should pump it manually 3-5 times.
- Step 38Install the new shock absorber on the hydraulic coil spring compressor.
- Step 39Install the dust sleeve and the bump stop on the new shock absorber.
- Step 40Install the spring on the shock absorber.
- Step 41Compress the spring.
- Step 42Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
- Step 43Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a combination spanner #19. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 60 Nm torque.Replacement: suspension strut – Renault Scenic 2. Professionals recommend:Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
- Step 44Decompress the spring.
- Step 45Remove the assembled shock strut.
- Step 46Install the shock strut into the wheel arch.
