Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat 3C5. AUTODOC experts recommend:
All mounts of the front shock struts should be replaced simultaneously.
The replacement procedure is identical for the mounts of the left and right shock struts of the front suspension.
Be sure to replace all self-locking nuts and bolts during installation.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat Variant B6. Recommended sequence of steps:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat 3C B6 Variant. Tip:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Disconnect the ABS sensor wiring. Use a crowbar.
Step 7
Disconnect the ABS sensor electric socket. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 8
Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 9
Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a drive socket #21. Use a tap wrench. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 10
Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat 3C5. AUTODOC recommends:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur. Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
Step 11
Clean the brake disc fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 12
Unscrew the brake disc fastening. Use Torx T30. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 13
Remove the brake disc.
Step 14
Clean the hub. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 15
Clean the stabiliser link fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 16
Unscrew the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the shock strut. Use a combination spanner #19. Use HEX No.H5. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 17
Clean the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 18
Unscrew the end fastening nut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 19
Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller.
Step 20
Clean the wheel hub fastener. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 21
Unscrew the wheel hub axle nut. Use a drive socket #24.
Step 22
Clean the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 23
Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 24
Disconnect the lower arm from the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar.
Step 25
Remove the drive shaft from the wheel hub.
Step 26
Lower the car. Open the bonnet.
Step 27
Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 28
Remove the cowl grille seal.
Step 29
Remove the clips of the plastic cowl grille.
Step 30
Raise up and remove the cowl grille.
Step 31
Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 32
Unscrew the top fastening of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW Passat Variant B6
Step 33
Remove the suspension strut.
Step 34
Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat 3C B6 Variant. Tip:
Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
Step 35
Compress the spring.
Step 36
Treat the shock strut rod. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 37
Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a combination spanner #21. Use HEX No.H6. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 38
Remove the top strut mount.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat 3C5. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Examine the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop. Replace them if necessary.
Step 39
Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
Step 40
Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a combination spanner #21. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 60 Nm torque.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat Variant B6. Tip from AUTODOC:
Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
Step 41
Treat the shock strut rod. Use copper grease.
Step 42
Decompress the spring.
Step 43
Remove the assembled shock strut.
Step 44
Clean the mounting seats of the shock strut. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 45
Install the shock strut into the wheel arch.
AUTODOC recommends:
VW Passat 3C B6 Variant – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 46
Tighten the upper fastener of the shock absorber strut mount. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 15 Nm torque.+90°

Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 47
Treat the fasteners of the shock strut mount. Use copper grease.
Step 48
Install and secure the cowl grille.
Step 49
Install the fasteners of the wiper plastic cowl grille.
Step 50
Install the cowl grille seal. Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 51
Close the hood. Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 52
Clean the splines of the drive shaft CV joint. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 53
Install the drive shaft into the wheel hub.
Step 54
Connect the lower arm to the steering knuckle.
Step 55
Tighten the ball joint fastener. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 60 Nm torque.
Step 56
Tighten the hub. Use a drive socket #24. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 70 Nm torque.+90°

Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 57
Tighten the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the shock strut. Use a combination spanner #19. Use HEX No.H5. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 60 Nm torque.
Step 58
Install the brake disc.
Step 59
Tighten the brake disc fastening. Use Torx T30. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 4 Nm torque.
Step 60
Install the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Step 61
Tighten the brake caliper bracket. Use a drive socket #21. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 200 Nm torque.
Step 62
Connect the ABS sensor wiring.
Step 63
Connect the ABS sensor electric socket. Use a hammer.
Step 64
Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
Step 65
Tighten the fastening nut connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 100 nm torque.
Step 66
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 67
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat 3C B6 Variant. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 68
Install the wheel.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat 3C5. AUTODOC experts recommend:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 69
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 70
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 71
Remove the jacks and chocks.
