The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right lower control arms.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: front lower arm – Mercedes W210. Recommended sequence of steps:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Mercedes W210
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Treat all joints of the arm. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Unscrew the front arm fastener. Use a combination spanner #22.
Step 8
Unscrew the rear arm fastener. Use a combination spanner #22.
Step 9
Loosen the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #22.
Step 10
Install the coil spring compressor on the coil spring.
Replacement: front lower arm – Mercedes W210. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Use adapters and jaws of the appropriate size. The sping coils should be securely fixed with the coil spring compressor. Use high quality coil spring compressors.
Step 11
Compress the spring.
Replacement: front lower arm – Mercedes W210. Tip from AUTODOC:
Be careful. The compressed spring is powerful and in case of disrupting ties, straightening, it can cause injury.
Step 12
Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #22.
Step 13
Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller.
Step 14
Unscrew the fastener connecting the shock strut to the suspension control arm. Use a drive socket #16. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 15
Disconnect the transverse stabilizer fastener from the link. Use Torx T50. Use a tap wrench.
Step 16
Remove the stabilizer rod. Use a crowbar.
Step 17
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 18
Remove the fastening bolt. Use a pin punch. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 19
Unscrew the front arm fastener. Use a combination spanner #22 (2 pieces).
Step 20
Remove the fastening nut.
Step 21
Unscrew the rear arm fastener. Use a combination spanner #22 (2 pieces).
Step 22
Make a mark on the camber adjustment bolt. Use a crowbar. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 23
Remove the fastening nut.
Step 24
Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 25
Unscrew the fastener connecting the ball joint to the suspension control arm. Use a combination spanner #22.
Step 26
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: front lower arm – Mercedes W210. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 27
Remove the coil spring together with the coil spring compressor.
Replacement: front lower arm – Mercedes W210. AUTODOC experts recommend:
While the spring is compressed, do not do any operations on it.
Step 28
Detach the fastener connecting the suspension level sensor to the suspension control arm. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 29
Remove the arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 30
Clean the mounting seats and the thread of the suspension arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 31
Install a new arm.
Replacement: front lower arm – Mercedes W210. AUTODOC recommends:
During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 32
Install the ball joint on the new arm. Use a combination spanner #22.
Step 33
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 34
Position the control arm according to its mounting holes. Use a rubber mallet. Use a crowbar.
Step 35
Install the control arm fasteners. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 36
Attach the fastener connecting the suspension level sensor to the suspension control arm. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 37
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Mercedes W210 – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
Step 38
Install the coil spring together with the rubber mounts into the mounting seats.
Replacement: front lower arm – Mercedes W210. Tip from AUTODOC:
Make sure that the coil spring is correctly positioned in its mounting seats.
Step 39
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 40
Attach the suspension control arm to the shock strut.
Step 41
Install the fastener connecting the shock strut to the suspension control arm.
Step 42
Tighten the ball joint fastening nut. Use a combination spanner #22.
Step 43
Raise the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
Step 44
Tighten the arm fastening to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #22. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 nm torque.
Step 45
Decompress the spring.
Step 46
Remove the coil spring compressor.
Step 47
Remove the support from under the arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging assemblies and mechanisms.
Step 48
Ιnstall the transverse stabilizer link.
Step 49
Tighten the ball joint fastener. Use a combination spanner #22. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 80 nm torque.
Step 50
install the rod fastening to the stabilizer and tighten it. Use Torx T50. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 45 nm torque.
Step 51
Tighten the fastener connecting the shock strut to the suspension control arm. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 55 nm torque.
Step 52
Treat all joints of the arm. Use copper grease.
Step 53
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 54
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Mercedes W210
Step 55
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 56
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 112 nm torque.
Step 57
Remove the jacks and chocks.
