Replacement: cv boot – VW PASSAT (3B3). AUTODOC experts recommend:
- The procedure for replacing the right- and left-side CV axle boots is identical.
- Replace CV axle boots in pairs.
- Check the condition of the CV joints each time you replace CV axle boots. Replace the CV joints if necessary.
- Please note: all work on the car – VW PASSAT (3B3) – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Secure the wheels with chocks.
- Step 2Loosen the fastener of the driveshaft. Use HEX No.H14. Use a tap wrench.Step 3Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
- Step 4Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.Step 5Unscrew the wheel bolts.AUTODOC recommends:Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW PASSAT (3B3)
- Step 6Remove the wheel.
- Step 7Spread the brake pads. Use a crowbar.
- Step 8Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 9Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
- Step 10Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.Replacement: cv boot – VW PASSAT (3B3). Professionals recommend:Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur.Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.Step 11Remove the brake disc.
- Step 12Remove the fastening bolt. Use HEX No.H14. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 13Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.Step 14Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.Step 15Unscrew the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 16Remove the fastening bolt.
- Step 17Remove the control arms. Use a crowbar.
- Step 18Detach the driveshaft from the steering knuckle.Replacement: cv boot – VW PASSAT (3B3). Tip from AUTODOC:Make sure that the drive shaft is not unloaded (when the car is jacked).
- Step 19Clean the clamps of the CV joint boot. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.Step 20Detach the clamps of the CV joint boot. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 21Install and tighten the drive shaft bolt. Use HEX No.H14. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 22Remove the CV joint together with its boot.
- Step 23Remove the fastening bolt. Use HEX No.H14. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 24Clean the CV joint mounting seat. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
- Step 25Remove the CV joint circlip. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 26Install the CV joint together with the boot in a vice.
- Step 27Detach the CV joint boot.
- Step 28Remove the CV joint bearing. Use a crowbar.
- Step 29Clean the CV joint mounting seat. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
- Step 30Remove the CV joint circlip.Step 31Clean the CV joint mounting seat. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.Step 32Install the CV joint bearing.
- Step 33Loosen the vice and remove the CV joint.Step 34Pack the CV joint with the grease supplied in the kit.
- Step 35Move the inner race of the CV joint from side to side to bed it in.Step 36Install the CV joint boot on the CV axle. Use a flat screwdriver.
