Since you overfilled the oil and experienced backfiring and smoke, it's important to thoroughly check the intake and boost system for leaks or damage.
To find the boost leak, start with these steps:
- Visual Inspection: Check all intercooler pipes, hoses, clamps, and connections from the turbocharger to the intake manifold for cracks, looseness, or disconnections. Pay special attention to rubber couplers and plastic pipes which can degrade.
- Use a Boost Leak Tester or Smoke Machine: A boost leak tester attaches to the turbo inlet and pressurizes the system to identify leaks by listening or watching for escaping air. A smoke machine pumps smoke into the intake system, and escaping smoke reveals leak locations.
- OBD Live Data Analysis: Using a scan tool like OBDeleven or VCDS, monitor requested boost vs. actual boost and intake air pressure to confirm the presence of a leak.
- Check the PCV Valve and Hoses: Faulty PCV valves and worn hoses can cause boost leaks.
- Inspect Turbocharger Components: Overfilling oil can damage the turbo seals and cause unusual turbo behavior, so inspect for oil leaks or shaft play.
- Test Intake Manifold and Vacuum Lines: Check all vacuum lines and intake manifold gaskets for leaks.
Following this systematic approach helps pinpoint boost leaks causing P0299. Addressing leaks quickly protects the turbocharger from further damage caused by running underboost and strain.
Watching diagnostic and repair videos specific to Audi A4 boost leak detection is very helpful for visual guidance.
