Hey everyone! I’m thinking about getting some Halfords car ramps for DIY repairs on my 1998 Honda Civic. Has anyone used them? Are they sturdy enough for oil changes and brake jobs? Any issues with slipping or durability? Thanks!

The Halfords 2 Tonne Car Ramps are generally sturdy and suitable for basic DIY repairs like oil changes and brake inspections on cars like your 1998 Honda Civic, provided your tire width is between 135mm and 185mm. They’re made from steel, offering a solid platform with a height clearance of about 20cm, enough for most under-car tasks.

    Pros
Strong steel construction rated for up to 2 tonnes total (1 tonne per ramp).

Bright orange color improves visibility in the workshop.

Good height clearance for oil changes, exhaust work, and brake checks.

    Common Issues & Considerations
Slipping: On smooth or wet surfaces like concrete or paving slabs, ramps can slip or “scoot” when driving up, which can be nerve-wracking. Users recommend securing ramps with strong straps or placing them against a fixed object to prevent movement.

Steepness: Some find the ramps quite steep, making it tricky to drive up, especially if your Civic has a low front spoiler or low ground clearance.

Tire Width: If your tires are wider than about 185mm, they may overhang the ramp edges, which could be unsafe or cause damage.

Durability: While Halfords ramps are sturdy, some users prefer investing in more expensive ramps or combining ramps with axle stands for extra safety and versatility.

    Safety Tips
Always use ramps on a firm, level surface.

Engage the handbrake and leave the car in gear (or park for automatics) to prevent rolling.

Consider chocking the rear wheels for added security.

Avoid working under the car without additional support like axle stands if you plan to remove wheels or do extensive work.

Inspect ramps regularly for damage or rust, especially if they’re older.

Halfords 2 Tonne Car Ramps are a solid, budget-friendly option suitable for oil changes and brake jobs on a 1998 Honda Civic. They’re sturdy and provide enough clearance for basic tasks. However, be mindful of potential slipping on smooth surfaces and the ramp steepness, especially if your car is low. Securing the ramps and using them on a flat, non-slip surface improves safety. For more extensive repairs or wheel removal, axle stands in combination with a jack are recommended.

Many DIYers find ramps convenient for quick under-car access but pair them with axle stands for peace of mind and versatility.
