- First, safely jack up the rear of the vehicle and remove the rear wheel.
- Look for a small set screw or retaining screw on the face of the brake drum. This screw often holds the drum in place on the wheel studs.
- Remove this set screw if present.
- The drum usually should then slide off the wheel studs easily. However, it may be stuck due to rust or corrosion.
- If the drum does not come off easily, it may be necessary to:
- Loosen or remove the castellated nut or axle hub nut if the drum is integrated with the hub or pressed tightly.
- Tap gently around the drum edge or rear with a rubber mallet to break corrosion seal.
- Rotate the drum back and forth, sometimes after loosening the brake shoe adjustment through the backing plate slot to retract the brake shoes, giving clearance for drum removal.
Also, be cautious that the brake system parts—shoes, springs, and adjusters—are small and delicate on the Midget II, so a gentle approach plus consulting a model-specific manual or visual guide (videos exist for similar Daihatsu drum brakes) is wise.
If you want detailed diagrams or step-by-step instructions, some service manuals or parts suppliers provide brake system documentation for Daihatsu mini trucks.
So, in short:
- Remove wheel
- Remove set screw (if any)
- Try sliding off drum
- If stuck, loosen axle nut or adjust brake shoe clearance
- Use gentle mallet taps if needed
This method is typical for the Daihatsu Midget II and many similar small Daihatsu and mini truck models.
