Automatic gearbox SKODA Octavia IV Saloon (NX3)
- @Thicaterfe21.06.2024 09:33MemberHi. Without proper diagnostics, it is hard to identify the problem with the automatic transmission. Maybe the oil level in the box is low. Maybe aggressive driving style or a combination of factors. You should start by checking the level and condition of the oil in the box. As the error about overheating goes away and appears after.
- @user_24253721.06.2024 14:53@ThicaterfeMemberThank you for the information. Please could you tell me how I can check the oil level in the box (box?). The general oil level in the car is satisfactory as its just been serviced. But thank you.
- @Thicaterfe24.06.2024 09:55@user_242537MemberHi. Checking the oil level in the box is done on a warmed up box. If you pour the full level on a cold box, when warmed up, the oil will begin to expand and flow out of the vents. It is better to have it checked by a specialist.

I would book in with your local dealership. Depending on the mileage, it may be due an DSG oil change. The oil change is a bit of a faff, as the oil has to be a certain temp for the test plan. Are you still in warranty? If not it may be worth asking about goodwill too.
- @user_24253729.06.2024 09:33@g. w.MemberThank you all for your advice. The car is now booked in to a Skoda dealer, for next week, for a diagnostic test. I will post the outcome on here. Thank you.
- @user_24253712.07.2024 19:14MemberHi AllCar now repaired by Skoda Dealer. Gear Selector Mechanism replaced. Pricey! But there you go.Thanks to all
- @Whice198115.07.2024 16:04@user_242537MemberWow, I never would have thought of that! Thanks for sharing how you solved the problem...this will really help a lot of us. Congrats on fixing your car! I hope it runs smoothly from now on.
- @IsaWill05.06.2025 14:58MemberHey all,
Jumping in here - own a Skoda Octavia and have been noticing hesitant shifts and a slight jolt from 1st to 2nd when cold. No warning lights, fluid's fresh and at the right level. Smooths out once warm. Anyone else had this? - @Oak3306.06.2025 03:02MemberHey all,

Anyone else had this? - @Stone4706.06.2025 14:38MemberI’ve read other forums suggesting it could be mechatronic-related or just typical DSG behaviour in colder temps - seems to be common among Skoda Octavia gearbox problems too. Anyone had a similar experience? Did a software update or reset help? Appreciate any info before I go down the diagnostic rabbit hole.
- @Oscar P.09.06.2025 13:08MemberAh yeah, I’ve had something similar with mine like a bit of hesitation and rough shifts, especially when it’s cold. Thought it was just dsg quirks at first, but turns out skoda problems like this aren’t exactly rare. A mate had luck with a software update, sorted most of it.
Automatic Gearbox overheating
I have an 2021 Octavia 1.5 e-Tec with an automatic gearbox. On a recent run (100 miles) a warning sign lit up on the dashboard. This was a gear shaped amber light with an exclamation mark inside. At the same time a warning triangle flashed up.
I checked the gear shaped sign and found that it was something to do with an overheating gearbox. Later on the journey the sign disappeared. The next day it reappeared, only to disappear after an hour or so.
If any one can help, I have two questions.
1. Is the car safe to drive?
2. I’m told by the local Skoda dealer that they are “full up” with appointments until July. Is there an alternative specialist firm that I might contact – as an alternative to Skoda – who will be able to fix the problem?
Thanks in advance.
