Replacement: wheel bearing – Mercedes W168. Professionals recommend:
- Do not re-use the bearing assembly of your Mercedes W168 car.
- The wheel hub bearing replacement procedure is identical for both wheels on the same axle.
- All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Mercedes W168. Use the following procedure:
- Step 1Secure the wheels with chocks.Step 2Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
- Step 3Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
- Step 4Unscrew the wheel bolts.AUTODOC recommends:Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Mercedes W168
- Step 5Remove the wheel.
- Step 6Clean the brake caliper fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 7Unscrew the brake caliper fastening. Use a drive socket #12. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 8Spread the brake pads. Use a crowbar.
- Step 9Remove the brake caliper.Replacement: wheel bearing – Mercedes W168. Tip from AUTODOC experts:Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur. Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
- Step 10Remove the brake pads. Use a crowbar.
- Step 11Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 12Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
- Step 13Remove the caliper bracket.
- Step 14Clean the brake disc fastener. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 15Unscrew the brake disc fastening. Use Torx T30. Use an impact screwdriver.
- Step 16Remove the brake disc.
- Step 17Remove the wheel hub nut cap. Use a crowbar. Use a hammer.Replacement: wheel bearing – Mercedes W168. Tip from AUTODOC:In some cars, the wheel hub nut is not protected with a cap.
- Step 18Unstake the wheel hub retaining nut. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
- Step 19Unscrew the hub nut. Use a drive socket #30. Use a tap wrench.
- Step 20Remove the hub and the bearing together, since they are a sealed unit.
- Step 21Clean the wheel hub bearing retaining ring. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 22Remove the wheel hub bearing retaining ring. Use circlip pliers.
- Step 23Press out the wheel hub bearing. Use a bush and bearing driver set.
- Step 24Clean the hub bearing mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 25Press-fit a new bearing into the wheel hub. Use a bush and bearing driver set.Replacement: wheel bearing – Mercedes W168. AUTODOC recommends:Check to make sure the wheel hub bearing is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment. Stop pressing on the surface of the bearing immediately after it has been fitted into its mounting seat.
- Step 26Install the wheel hub bearing retaining ring. Use circlip pliers.
