The replacement procedure is identical for the mounts of the right and left shock absorbers of the rear suspension.
Both mounts of the rear shock struts should be replaced simultaneously.
During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat B5 Variant. Recommended sequence of steps:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW Passat B5 Variant
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean the shock absorber fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 8
Secure the rear axle beam. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 9
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 10
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat B5 Variant. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 11
Unscrew the upper fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
Step 12
Remove the shock absorber.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat B5 Variant. Tip from AUTODOC:
To avoid injuries, hold the shock absorber when undoing the fastening bolts.
Step 13
Clean the shock absorber rod fastener. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 14
Remove the shock absorber piston rod fastening. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 15
Remove the top strut mount.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat B5 Variant. Professionals recommend:
Examine the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop. Replace them if necessary.
Step 16
Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
Step 17
Screw the shock strut piston rod upper fastening. Use a combination spanner #17. Use an adjustable wrench. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 25 Nm torque.
Step 18
Clean the shock absorber mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 19
Place the shock absorber in the wheel arch and secure it.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat B5 Variant. Tip:
To avoid injury, hold the shock absorber cautiously tight when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 20
Screw the upper fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #13.
Install the shock absorber mount using the center hole as a guide.
Step 21
Tighten the top shock absorber fastening. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 36 Nm torque.
Step 22
Secure the rear axle beam. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 23
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 24
Tighten the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 50 Nm torque.+90°

Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 25
Remove the mounting from under the rear axle beam.
AUTODOC recommends:
VW Passat B5 Variant – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
Step 26
Treat the shock absorber fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 27
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 28
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat B5 Variant. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 29
Install the wheel.
Replacement: strut mount – VW Passat B5 Variant. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 30
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 31
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 nm torque.
Step 32
Remove the jacks and chocks.
