Both coil springs of the rear suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right coil springs of the rear suspension.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W203. Use the following procedure:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.

Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3

Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Mercedes W203
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Unscrew the fasteners of the control arm plastic cover. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 7

Remove the control arm plastic cover.
Step 8

Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 9

Unscrew the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a combination spanner #22. Use a drive socket #21. Use a drive socket #22. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 10

Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 11

Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 12

Unscrew the fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a drive socket #19. Use a tap wrench.
Step 13

Support the rear control arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 14

Install the coil spring compressor on the coil spring.

Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W203. Professionals recommend:
Use adapters and jaws of the appropriate size. The sping coils should be securely fixed with the coil spring compressor. Use high quality coil spring compressors.
Step 15

Compress the spring by turning the lead screw of the coil spring compressor.

Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W203. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Compress the coil spring compressor until there is enough room to remove the spring. Do not compress the tool to the full: the spring coils must not touch each other. Be careful. The compressed spring is powerful and in case of disrupting ties, straightening, it can cause injury.
Step 16

Remove the fastening bolt. Use a drive socket #19. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 17

Remove the support from under the rear control arm.

AUTODOC recommends:
Mercedes W203 – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
Step 18

Remove the coil spring together with the coil spring compressor.

AUTODOC recommends:
While the spring is compressed, do not do any operations on it.
Step 19

Clean the coil spring mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 20

Decompress the spring.
Step 21

Take out the spring.
Step 22

Install a new coil spring on the coil spring compressor.

Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W203. Tip:
Use adapters and jaws of the appropriate size.
Step 23

Compress the spring.
Step 24

Install the coil spring together with the rubber mounts into the mounting seats.
Step 25

Support the rear control arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack. Use a crowbar.
Step 26

Install the fastening bolt. Use a drive socket #19. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 27

Remove the support from under the rear control arm.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W203. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 28

Release the coil spring by turning the lead screw of the coil spring compressor.

Please note!
Make sure that the coil spring is correctly positioned in its mounting seats.
Step 29

Remove the coil spring compressor.
Step 30

Support the rear control arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 31

Tighten the fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a drive socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 70 Nm torque.
Step 32

Tighten the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 55 Nm torque.
Step 33

Tighten the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a combination spanner #22. Use a drive socket #21. Use a drive socket #22. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 34

Remove the support from under the rear control arm.

Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W203. Tip:
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging assemblies and mechanisms.
Step 35

Treat the shock absorber fasteners. Treat all joints of the arm. Use copper grease.
Step 36

Install the control arm plastic cover.
Step 37

Screw the fasteners of the control arm plastic cover. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 38

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 39

Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W203. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 40

Install the wheel.

Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W203. AUTODOC experts recommend:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 41

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 42

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 110 Nm torque.
Step 43

Remove the jacks and chocks.
