Replacement: brake caliper repair kit – Mercedes W124. Tip:

The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right brake calipers on the same axle.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Replacement: brake caliper repair kit – Mercedes W124. Take the following steps:

Step 1

Open the bonnet.
Step 2

Unscrew the brake fluid reservoir cap.
Step 3

Secure the wheels with chocks.

Step 4

Loosen the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a tap wrench.
Step 5

Raise the car.

AUTODOC recommends:
If you are using a jack, make sure it rests on a flat surface without any unevenness.Be sure to additionally secure the car with jack stands.
Step 6

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Mercedes W124
Step 7

Remove the wheel.
Step 8

Clean the brake pad guide pins. Use a wire brush. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.

Step 9

Remove the brake pad guide pins. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
Step 10

Remove the retaining spring of the brake pads.
Step 11

Spread the brake pads. Use a crowbar (2 pieces).
Step 12

Remove the brake pads.
Step 13

Clamp the brake hose off using a brake hose clamp.
Step 14

Clean the mounting seat of the brake hose on the brake caliper. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 15

Loosen the brake hose fastener. Use a combination spanner #14.
Step 16

Clean the brake caliper fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 17

Unscrew the brake caliper fasteners. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 18

Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 19

Remove the brake caliper.
Step 20

Unscrew the brake hose from the brake caliper.
Step 21

Clean the brake bleeder screw. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 22

Undo the brake bleeder screw. Use a drive socket #9. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 23

Unscrew the fasteners connecting the two parts of the brake caliper. Use a drive socket #14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 24

Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 25

Separate the two parts of the caliper from each other.
Step 26

Remove the o-rings. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 27

Remove the dust boots of the brake caliper pistons. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 28

Remove the brake caliper pistons. Use water pump pliers.
Step 29

Remove the piston O-rings. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 30

Clean the mounting seats of the pistons and related components. Use a wire brush. Use a nylon cleaning brush. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 31

Install new caliper piston O-rings.
Step 32

Fit dust boots on new brake caliper pistons.

Replacement: brake caliper repair kit – Mercedes W124. AUTODOC recommends:
Treat the pistons and their seats with brake fluid to prevent scoring on the walls of the cylinders during installation.
Step 33

Install the new brake caliper pistons.
Step 34

Install dust boot retaining rings.
Step 35

Install new o-rings.

Step 36

Join the two parts of the caliper together.
Step 37

Install the fastening bolts.
Step 38

Tighten the fasteners connecting the two parts of the caliper. Use a drive socket #14. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 35 Nm torque.
Step 39

Tighten the brake bleeder screw.
Step 40

Clean the area where the brake hose connects to the caliper. Use a wire brush. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 41

Screw the brake hose into the caliper.
Step 42

Install the brake caliper and fasten it.
Step 43

Install the fastening bolts.
Step 44

Tighten the brake caliper fasteners. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 65 Nm torque.
Step 45

Tighten the fastener connecting the brake pipe to the brake caliper. Use a combination spanner #14. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 18 Nm torque.
Step 46

Install the brake pads.
Step 47

Install the retaining spring of the brake pads.
Step 48

Install the brake pad guide pins. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
Step 49

Connect the brake bleeder kit to the brake bleeder screw.
Step 50

Remove the brake hose clamp.
Step 51

Bleed the brake system.
Step 52

Tighten the bleeder screw. Use a combination spanner #9.
Step 53

Disconnect the brake bleeder kit.

Step 54

Tighten the brake caliper bleed screw. Use a drive socket #9. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 8 Nm torque.
Step 55

Attach the brake caliper bleed screw cap.
Step 56

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use ceramic grease.
Step 57

Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.

Step 58

Install the wheel.

Replacement: brake caliper repair kit – Mercedes W124. AUTODOC experts recommend:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 59

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 60

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 110 Nm torque.
Step 61

Remove the jacks and chocks.

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Replacement: brake caliper repair kit – Mercedes W124. Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir and top up if necessary.
Step 62

Tighten the brake fluid reservoir cap.
Step 63

Close the bonnet.
