Replacement: hand brake cable – Mercedes W124. AUTODOC recommends:
Replace the parking brake cables in pairs.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: hand brake cable – Mercedes W124. Recommended sequence of steps:
Step 1
Open the bonnet.
Step 2
Unscrew the brake fluid reservoir cap.
Step 3
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 4
Loosen the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a tap wrench.
Step 5
Raise the car.
AUTODOC recommends:
If you are using a jack, make sure it rests on a flat surface without any unevenness.Be sure to additionally secure the car with jack stands.
Step 6
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
Replacement: hand brake cable – Mercedes W124. AUTODOC recommends:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 7
Remove the wheel.
Step 8
Clean the brake pad guide pins. Use a wire brush. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 9
Remove the brake pad guide pins. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
Step 10
Remove the retaining spring of the brake pads.
Step 11
Spread the brake pads. Use a crowbar (2 pieces).
Step 12
Remove the brake pads.
Step 13
Clean the brake caliper fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 14
Unscrew the brake caliper fasteners. Use a combination spanner #17.
Step 15
Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 16
Remove the brake caliper.
Replacement: hand brake cable – Mercedes W124. Professionals recommend:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur.
Step 17
Clean the brake disc fastener. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 18
Unscrew the brake disc fasteners. Use HEX No.H5. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 19
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 20
Release the parking brake adjuster. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 21
Remove the brake disc.
Step 22
Remove the lower brake shoe return spring. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 23
Remove the hold-down springs of the parking brake shoes. Use long nose pliers.
Step 24
Remove the parking brake shoes.
Step 25
Clean the fastener connecting the parking brake cable to the rear knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 26
Unscrew the fastener connecting the parking brake cable to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 27
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 28
Remove the pin connecting the cable to the parking brake shoe shackle. Use long nose pliers.
Step 29
Remove the parking brake shoe shackle.
Step 30
Clean the parking brake cable adjuster. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 31
Loosen the parking brake cable adjuster. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 32
Clean the retainer connecting the parking brake cable to the car body. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 33
Remove the retainer connecting the parking brake cable to the car body. Use a crowbar.
Step 34
Remove the parking brake cable.
Step 35
Clean the parking brake cable mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 36
Install a new parking brake cable. Use a hammer.
Step 37
Install the retainer connecting the parking brake cable to the car body.
Step 38
Install the pin connecting the cable to the parking brake shoe shackle.
Step 39
Install the parking brake shoe shackle.
Step 40
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 41
Tighten the fastener connecting the parking brake cable to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 24 Nm torque.
Step 42
Install new parking brake shoes.
Step 43
Install the hold-down springs of the parking brake shoes. Use long nose pliers.
Step 44
Install the lower return spring. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 45
Adjust the parking brake cable tension. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 46
Clean the wheel hub. Use a wire brush.
Step 47
Treat the contacting surface. Use ceramic grease.
Step 48
Install the brake disc.
Step 49
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 50
Tighten the brake disc fasteners. Use HEX No.H5. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 10 Nm torque.
Step 51
Set the parking brake adjuster in the correct position. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 52
Install the brake caliper and fasten it.
Step 53
Install the fastening bolts.
Step 54
Tighten the brake caliper fasteners. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 65 Nm torque.
Step 55
Install the brake pads.
Step 56
Install the retaining spring of the brake pads.
Step 57
Install the brake pad guide pins. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
Step 58
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
Step 59
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use ceramic grease.
Step 60
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts. Mercedes W124
Step 61
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 62
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 110 Nm torque.
Step 63
Remove the jacks and chocks.
AUTODOC recommends:
Mercedes W124 – Press the brake pedal several times with the engine shut down until you feel the resistance built up.Check the brake fluid level in the expansion tank and top up if necessary.
Step 64
Tighten the brake fluid reservoir cap.
Step 65
Close the bonnet.
