Warning! Shut down the engine before starting any work – BMW X5 E53
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Open the fuel door.
Step 2
Unscrew the fuel filler cap.
Step 3
Lift the car and set it on jack stands.
Step 4
Support the underbody panel. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 5
Unscrew fixing bolts of the protective cover. Use a drive socket #12.
Step 6
Unscrew the heat insulation fasteners. Use a drive socket #8. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 7
Remove the protective cover. Use a crowbar.
Step 8
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: fuel filter – BMW X5 E53. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 9
Loosen the fuel filter mounting. Use a Phillips screwdriver.
Step 10
Prepare a container for fluids.
Step 11
Treat the fasteners attaching the tubes to the fuel filter. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 12
Loosen the fuel filter clamps. Use a drive socket #7. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 13
Disconnect the fuel supply lines from the fuel filter. Use round-nose pliers.
Replacement: fuel filter – BMW X5 E53. Tip:
Be careful! Fuel may leak from the filter housing and hoses.
Step 14
Remove the fuel filter. Put the old filter cartridge in the container.
Step 15
Install a new fuel filter.

Remember, it is important not to mix up the input and output of the filter. Arrows on the filter indicate the direction of fuel flow.During installation, take care to prevent dust and dirt from getting into the fuel filter housing.Attention! Use quality filters – BMW X5 E53.
Step 16
Tighten the fuel filter fasteners. Use a Phillips screwdriver.
Step 17
Connect the fuel supply lines to the fuel filter.
Step 18
Tighten the fuel supply line fastening. Use a drive socket #7. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 19
Take the fluid container away from under the fuel filter.
Step 20
Install the protective cover.
Step 21
Tighten fixing bolts of the protective cover. Use a drive socket #12. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 22
Screw in the heat insulation fasteners. Use a drive socket #8. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 23
Remove the support from under the underbody panel.
Replacement: fuel filter – BMW X5 E53. AUTODOC recommends:
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging assemblies and mechanisms.
Step 24
Lower the car.
Step 25
Tighten the fuel filler cap.
Step 26
Close the fuel door.
AUTODOC recommends:
Before starting off, switch the ignition on and off several times. This should be done to activate the fuel pump to make it pump fuel through the fuel system.
Step 27
Run the engine for a few minutes. This is necessary in order to make sure that the component operates properly.
Step 28
Shut off the engine.
