Replacement: brake drum – VW Golf 3. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
- Replace the brake drums on VW Golf 3 in pair for the rear axle. Disregarding the parts state. It ensures even braking.
- The replacement procedure is identical for the right and left brake drums on the same axle.
- When replacing the brake drums, be sure to also change the brake shoes.
- All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Secure the wheels with chocks.
- Step 2Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
- Step 3Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
- Step 4Unscrew the wheel bolts.Replacement: brake drum – VW Golf 3. AUTODOC experts recommend:To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
- Step 5Remove the wheel.
- Step 6Remove the wheel hub nut cap. Use a crowbar. Use a hammer.
- Step 7Remove the cotter pin securing the hub nut. Use a crowbar.
- Step 8Unscrew the wheel hub axle nut. Use a drive socket #24. Use a tap wrench.
- Step 9Remove the brake drum. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 10Clean the stub axle. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
- Step 11Compress the wheel cylinder. Use water pump pliers.
- Step 12Move the parking brake shoes against the drum. Use pliers.
- Step 13Install a brake drum.
- Step 14Treat the stub axle. Use a multipurpose grease.
- Step 15Screw the wheel hub axle nut. Use a drive socket #24. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 16Install the wheel.AUTODOC recommends:Important! Hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts. VW Golf 3
- Step 17Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.Replacement: brake drum – VW Golf 3. Professionals recommend:Align the brake drum.
