All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: air filter – BMW E39 touring. Take the following steps:
Step 1
Open the hood.
Step 2
Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 3
Unscrew the engine cover fastener. Use HEX No.H5. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 4
Remove the engine cover.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: air filter – BMW E39 touring. Do not use excessive force when removing the part as this may damage it.
Step 5
Remove the fasteners of the air duct housing. Use a clip removal tool.
Step 6
Detach the air duct housing from the air filter housing. Use a clip removal tool.
Step 7
Unscrew the engine cover fastener. Use HEX No.H5. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 8
Unscrew the oil filler plug.
Step 9
Remove the engine cover.
Replacement: air filter – BMW E39 touring. Tip:
Do not apply excessive force when removing the part. Otherwise you may damage it.
Step 10
Tighten the oil filler cap.
Step 11
Remove the filter element from the filter housing.
Step 12
Cover the air intake hose with a microfibre towel to prevent dust and dirt from getting into the system.
Step 13
Clean the air filter cover and housing.
Replacement: air filter – BMW E39 touring. Tip from AUTODOC:
Before cleaning the air filter cover and housing, cover the air duct parts, mass airflow sensor (if available), throttle valve with a clean cloth.
Step 14
Remove the microfibre towel from the air intake hose.
Step 15
Insert a new filter element into the filter housing. Make sure that the filter edge fits tight to the housing.

Replacement: air filter – BMW E39 touring. Be sure to position the filtering element correctly. Avoid misalignment.Take care to only use quality filters.During installation, make sure to prevent dust and dirt from getting into the air filter housing.
Step 16
Unscrew the oil filler plug.
Step 17
Install the engine cover and secure it.

Step 18
Tighten the oil filler cap.
Step 19
Screw in the engine cover fasteners. Use HEX No.H5. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 20
Install the air duct housing.
Step 21
Install the air duct housing fasteners.
Step 22
Install the engine cover and secure it.

When installing, do not use excessive force to avoid damage to the part.
Step 23
Screw in the engine cover fasteners. Use HEX No.H5. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 24
Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 25
Close the hood.
