Hi, I’m considering a 2015 Volvo V60 as a small estate car for city driving

How does it handle in tight urban spaces, and are there any specific issues I should watch out for, like fuel economy or maintenance quirks?

When purchasing, it is worth checking that the rear boot door works properly and that the rear seats fold down easily. The automatic transmission requires a fluid change every three years, so check the documentation to ensure this has been done. Overall, the V60 has a good reputation for reliability. Early diesel-powered cars may have had problems with clogged particulate filters, but this was often remedied by a good, long drive. Knocking at low revs has also been reported in diesel engines, although this did not necessarily lead to vehicle failure. There have also been reports of EGR problems with some D4-powered cars, causing the engine check light to come on and the car to go into emergency mode. Vehicles equipped with a 2-litre diesel engine are at risk of engine fires, so pay attention to any unusual smells in the cabin, the engine warning light coming on, or unstable engine performance when accelerating. The fuel hose used in some models has been found to crack from the inside, which could lead to fuel leakage if not repaired. This applies to vehicles manufactured between 11 April 2015 and 30 March 2016. In some V60s manufactured between 1 July 2010 and 20 April 2015, coolant may leak during warm-up, which could cause the engine to catch fire in extreme circumstances. On some vehicles manufactured between 2 December 2010 and 2 February 2015 equipped with a manual transmission and a start/stop system, the parking brake may release without warning. This occurs when the engine is running and the gear lever is moved, so do not leave the vehicle unattended in such situations. Overall, these issues are not widespread and have not been found in a large number of vehicles.

The 2015 Volvo V60 is generally well-suited for city driving as a small estate, offering a blend of comfort, safety, and practicality with some considerations for tight urban spaces.

    Handling in Tight Urban Spaces
The V60’s size is compact enough for city driving, though as an estate it is larger than a typical hatchback, so maneuvering in very tight spots or narrow streets may require some care.

It features advanced driver aids like City Safety™, which helps avoid low-speed collisions in stop-and-go traffic by automatically braking when obstacles or vehicles are detected ahead (operates from 2 to 30 mph). This is very useful in urban congestion.

The car’s responsive steering and stability control systems (including Corner Traction Control and Advanced Stability Control) provide confident handling, making parking and tight turns manageable despite the estate body style.

Adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring further ease city driving and highway merging.

    Fuel Economy
The 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder (T5 Drive-E) paired with an 8-speed automatic offers respectable fuel economy for its class: around 25 mpg city and 37 mpg highway (EPA estimates), though real-world figures in stop-and-go urban traffic may be closer to 22 mpg.

All-wheel-drive versions have slightly lower fuel economy (around 20 mpg city).

    Common Issues and Maintenance Considerations
The V60 is generally reliable, but some owners note that the infotainment system and center console controls feel somewhat dated and less intuitive, which can be a minor annoyance.

The City Safety system is highly regarded but can be sensitive, with some drivers choosing to adjust or disable certain alerts to reduce nuisance warnings.

Maintenance costs are typical for a premium European estate, so budgeting for regular servicing and potential repairs on advanced electronics or AWD components is wise.

No major widespread mechanical issues are noted for this model year, but as with any turbocharged engine, ensure timely oil changes and monitor for any turbo-related wear.

The 2015 Volvo V60 handles well in urban environments with driver aids like City Safety and stability controls that help mitigate tight-space challenges.

Fuel economy is respectable for a compact estate, though expect lower figures in heavy city traffic.

Comfort and safety features are strong points, while infotainment usability and occasional system sensitivity may require some adjustment.

Overall, it’s a practical, safe, and comfortable small estate well-suited for city driving with enough cargo space and modern tech to meet daily needs.

This makes the V60 a solid choice if you want a premium, safe, and versatile estate for urban use without sacrificing comfort or style.
