Probable engine failure. PEUGEOT Boxer Van (230) (03.1994 - 06.2003)

Hello
The oil pressure light came on and we stopped immediately. I checked the oil and the level was okay. We had been having electrical issues and unfortuneately assumed the light came on due to this. We started the van and pulled away but after a few seconds the warning light came on again a loud banging noise came from the engine. We pulled over within a minute.
I am not sure whether this is relevant but just over a year ago we heard a similar sound and a different garage then identified and replaced a broken rocker arm. This happened not long after the that garage had serviced the engine and replaced the timing belt.
Our mechanic fears that the engine is no longer repairable and is finding it difficult to find a replacement engine for it. Is it worth him checking the engine first before assuming the engine is unrepairable? Could it be something less serious? Does anyone know where to source a replacement engine?
Many thanks in advance for your thoughts and knowledge. We look forward to hearing from you.
