Popcorn Popping Sound from exhaust SKODA SUPERB (3T4)

Popping sound from exhaust…..I emptied out my boot to dry out a leak, when driving now with the boot empty and back seats down I can hear a low volume “popping” sound from the exhaust.  It’s exactly what popcorn sounds like.  It’s random and sometimes rapid popping.  Any idea what might be causing that and how to go about fixing the problem?
