Nissan X Trail years to avoid NISSAN Qashqai II (J11) (11.2013 - ...)
@Tracey O´Connor01.09.2025 14:36@sophie_jAUTODOC expertWhen choosing a used Nissan X-Trail, it is worth being particularly cautious with certain generations and engines that are known for their problems.
T30 generation (2000-2007)
2.5 litre engine (QR25DE): This is one of the most problematic versions. The engine is prone to increased oil consumption due to piston ring wear. Problems may also arise with the catalytic converter, particles of which can enter the cylinders and damage the engine.
Rust: Early models may experience problems with corrosion of the body and frame.
T31 generation (2007-2013)
Continuously variable transmission (CVT): The most common and expensive problem with this generation. The CVT is sensitive to overheating and heavy loads. If oil changes are irregular (or non-existent) and driving is aggressive, it can fail.
2.0 diesel engine (M9R): This engine is generally reliable, but requires attention to the EGR system and particulate filter.
What's the bottom line?
To avoid potential problems, steer clear of models with the 2.5-litre QR25DE (T30) petrol engine and be very careful when buying a car with a CVT (T31).
When choosing any X-Trail, be sure to have a full diagnostic check and check the service history.

Hey folks, which Nissan X-Trail years should I steer clear of? Any specific models with dodgy reliability or common issues?
