Nissan Qashqai Years to Avoid: What I Wish I Knew NISSAN Qashqai II (J11) (11.2013 - ...)

Hey everyone, I’m considering buying a used Nissan Qashqai and I’ve heard mixed reviews about the 2014 model. Are there specific issues I should be aware of, like transmission problems or electrical faults? What other years are best avoided?

These cars have problems with automatic transmissions. They are not known for their reliability and their repair is quite expensive. There are no problems with manual transmissions. There are also problems with the interior heating motor, front seat heating, failures in the multimedia system, as well as problems with the logic and efficiency of the air conditioning system.

If you are considering buying a 2014 Qashqai, check the service history and test drive it to check the transmission and electrical system. If possible, choose a manual or a 2016 or later model to reduce the risk.

Some users have reported problems with the Xtronic CVT, especially jerking or slipping after a period of use. You should carefully inspect the transmission during a test drive, paying attention to the smoothness of the gear changes and any unusual signs.

I can't speak from personal experience, but I've heard that the earlier Qashqai models from 2007-2013 tend to be more reliable overall compared to the later ones. The 2014 model year seems to be one of the more problematic years. If possible, I'd suggest looking at a 2016 or newer Qashqai, as Nissan may have addressed some of those concerns by then. The manual transmission versions also don't seem to have the same troubles as the CVT autos.

That's really helpful, thanks. I'll definitely heed your advice and stay away from the 2014 models if possible. Do you know if the transmission issues carried over to later years as well, or did Nissan manage to sort that out? And any thoughts on the diesel vs petrol engines - are there notable differences in terms of reliability?

From what I've read, the transmission problems seem to have continued into the 2015-2017 model years as well, so I'd be cautious with those too. As for the engines, the diesel versions do generally seem a bit more reliable than the petrol models, but the diesel engines can also be more expensive to repair if something does go wrong. The 1.2-litre petrol engines are apparently pretty efficient and trouble-free, so that could be a good option if you don't need the extra pulling power of a diesel.

Yeah, the diesel Qashqais do have a reputation for being more reliable overall, but as @George White said, the repairs can get quite pricey if something major goes wrong. The 1.2-litre petrol is probably the sweet spot in terms of a good balance of performance, efficiency and lower maintenance costs. I'd also suggest looking at the Acenta trim level - it's the mid-spec model but still comes with a good amount of equipment, and you may be able to find a well-looked after used one for a reasonable price.

That's really valuable advice, thanks so much. I think I'll take your recommendations and focus my search on 2016 or newer Qashqais, ideally with the 1.2-litre petrol engine and a manual gearbox. And I'll be sure to thoroughly test drive any potential purchase, with a close eye on the transmission performance. This has been super helpful in managing my expectations and avoiding some of the common issues. Appreciate you all taking the time to share your insights!
