Have bought upper and lower tailgate seals for my 1967 MGB GT restoration. Moss, YouTube and MG Forums do not describe how these are fitted and, if done incorrectly, will lead to leaks into the rear of the car. Any ideas, with photos, please.
Thanks, Colin Brown.

Correct installation of the upper and lower tailgate seals is crucial for preventing water leaks into the rear of your MGB GT. While detailed photo guides are scarce, available resources and community advice can help ensure a proper, leak-free fit.
General Approach
- The seals are typically fitted into grooves around the hatch opening.
- Use a blunt tool (such as a flat-blade screwdriver) to compress and guide the seal into the groove, working slowly to avoid damaging the rubber.
- Avoid using excessive force or a mallet, as this can break the weather stripping.
Step-by-Step Guidance
1. Remove Old Seals and Clean Area
- Pull out the old seals carefully.
- Clean the groove and surrounding area to ensure a good seal.
2. Start with the Upper Seal
- Align the new seal with the groove at the top of the hatch opening.
- Use your fingers to press the seal into place, starting at one end.
- If the seal is tight, use a blunt screwdriver to gently push the seal into the groove. Work along the length of the seal, being careful not to tear or stretch it.
- If the seal requires trimming, do so only after fitting, ensuring the ends butt together neatly.
3. Install the Lower Seal
- The lower seal is usually fitted in a similar manner.
- Again, use your hands primarily and only use tools for stubborn sections.
- Ensure the seal sits evenly and is not twisted. - @tea.lover200005.06.2025 12:27Member4. Check Fit and Closure
- Close the tailgate gently to check for proper compression of the seals.
- Look for any gaps or areas where the seal is not seated properly.
- Adjust as needed before final trimming.
5. Test for Leaks
- After installation, test for leaks by spraying water around the tailgate. Check inside for any signs of moisture.
Community Tips and Cautions
- Do not use a rubber mallet or excessive force, as this can damage the seal.
- If the seal profile seems different from the original, check with your supplier—some reproduction seals may not fit as well as originals.
- If the groove is distorted, gently straighten it before fitting the new seal.
