Hey folks, just wondering which Mazda 6 model years should I steer clear of? Any dodgy years I should know about? Cheers!

When looking at Mazda6 model years to avoid, several stand out due to recurring and costly problems:

2003 and 2004: These years are widely regarded as the worst for the Mazda6, especially 2004, which has numerous reports of severe engine problems including engine failure around 98,000 miles. Idling issues and unstable RPM are common in 2004 models, often linked to faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or vacuum leaks.

2006, 2008, 2009, 2010: These years have been reported to have transmission problems, including slipping, rough shifting, and complete transmission failure sometimes occurring under 100,000 miles. The 2009 model is also notorious for melting dashboards and sticky interior surfaces.

2013, 2014, 2016: The 2014 model in particular has many complaints about transmission failure at relatively low mileage (around 55,000 miles). Electrical issues, overheating, and accessory troubles are also reported in these years.

Common issues across these problematic years include abnormal engine ticking noises, unstable speed control (notably in 2005), sensor faults (crankshaft/camshaft position sensors), overheating, and dashboard melting/stickiness.

More reliable Mazda6 years tend to be outside these ranges, with models post-2016 generally showing improved reliability. Also, proper maintenance and checking for recalls (such as soot build-up in intake valves on 2012-2018 models) can help avoid some issues.

Avoid Mazda6 models from 2003-2004 and 2006-2010 due to engine and transmission failures, and be cautious with 2013-2016 models, especially 2014, due to transmission and electrical problems. If considering a Mazda6, prioritize later models with documented maintenance and recall work completed for better reliability.
