How to replace the rear brakes on a Renault With Electronic Parking Brake (eg scenic Mk3) RENAULT

Hi there,

I spent ages looking everywhere trying to find a video on how to retract the EPB mechanism on my car without the expensive tooling.  The car in question has the motors on the rotors/calipers them selves as it is the Renault Scenic Mk3.

In the end I worked out my own approach from bits and pieces I read online.  I have made a video on how to do it – I hope it helps people:

Hi, Very good video, at the moment I really needed it because I also need to replace the rear brake discs on my Renault scenic mk3, but I  didnt know how to do it, after watching this video I think I will do everything as in the video and it will work. Thank you.

Thanks for sharing that video! It's a real lifesaver for us Renault owners. I've got a Kadjar and was struggling with the parking brake service mode. For those with a Kadjar, the process is similar but with a few differences:

    1. Turn ignition on without starting engine
    2. Press and hold brake pedal
    3. Pull and hold parking brake switch for 5 seconds
    4. Release brake pedal and parking brake switch
    5. Within 5 seconds, pull parking brake switch 3 times

The parking brake should now be in service mode. Remember to reset it after you're done by applying and releasing the brake a few times. This method has saved me a bundle on garage fees!

Blimey, talk about making things complicated! In my day, we just had a good ol' handbrake lever. Now we need a bloomin' engineering degree to change the brakes. Next thing you know, we'll need to solve a Rubik's cube just to open the boot!

@MatteoMartini, haha, too right! I reckon Renault engineers sit around thinking, "How can we make this simple task as convoluted as possible?" But in all seriousness, these electronic systems can be a right pain when they go wrong. My Scenic's parking brake decided to throw a wobbly last month. Turns out it was just a faulty sensor, but it had me sweating bullets thinking I'd need a new caliper!

Quick question for anyone who's tackled this before - after resetting the parking brake on my Kadjar, it feels a bit slack. Is this normal, or have I mucked something up? Don't fancy finding out the hard way when I park on a hill!

@daniel_sheffield, I had the same issue with my Kadjar. Give it a few good pulls on the switch to "recalibrate" it. If that doesn't sort it, you might need to adjust the cable tension. There's a adjuster under the car, but it's a bit fiddly to get to. Might be worth popping to a garage if you're not confident doing it yourself. Better safe than sorry when it comes to brakes!

A reader that works with the EPB system and can talk to it (not required but suggested). For making changes by hand.
