Hey everyone, I’m planning to get my 1998 Honda Civic MOT’d this year. Could someone clarify how early I can schedule it? Also, are there any specific issues I should watch out for with this model before the inspection? Thanks!

You can generally book your MOT test for your 1998 Honda Civic up to one month (28 days) before the current MOT expires. This allows the MOT certificate to be issued with a new expiry date starting the day after the current MOT ends, so you do not lose any remaining MOT validity.

For the 1998 Honda Civic, before the MOT inspection, it's good to watch out for the following common issues:
    - Lights and electrical equipment: Check all lamps, reflectors, indicators, and brake lights work well, as lighting faults are common MOT failures.
    - Suspension and brakes: Inspect for worn suspension components, uneven brake pad wear, and brake fluid condition.
    - Tyres and visibility: Tread depth should meet legal minimums (1.6 mm), and windscreen wipers and washers must function properly.
    - Exhaust emissions: Older petrol cars like the 1998 Civic must meet specific CO and HC emission limits; issues with the engine or emissions system can cause failures.
    - Body and structure: Corrosion or significant damage can be a problem on older vehicles.

Specifically for older Honda Civics, it’s good to check the timing belt condition and ensure that the engine runs smoothly without warning lights, as emission failures have been reported. Also, ensure good maintenance records if possible.

The MOT requires your vehicle to be at normal operating temperature (e.g., after a 5-mile drive) before testing.
