Hi everyone! I’m considering buying a used 2016 Mazda CX-5, but I’ve come across a listing mentioning it’s a Cat N vehicle. Can anyone explain what this means, especially in terms of potential issues or repairs I should watch out for?

A Cat N (Category N) vehicle, like the 2016 Mazda CX-5 you're considering, means it was written off by an insurer due to non-structural damage. This indicates the car has suffered damage that does not affect the core structure or chassis—for example, cosmetic damage, electrical faults, brakes, steering, or other non-structural components.

What does this mean for you as a buyer?
    * Repairs and Safety: The car can be repaired and safely driven again since its structural integrity remains intact. However, some safety-critical parts like brakes or steering components might have been damaged and replaced during repairs, so a thorough inspection is essential.
    * Cost and Maintenance: Cat N cars are often written off because repairing them was deemed uneconomical at the time, not necessarily because they are unsafe or unreliable. You may get a better price compared to similar non-write-off cars, but be aware that some repairs might have been done with used or aftermarket parts, which could affect long-term reliability or maintenance costs.
    * Insurance and Resale: Insuring a Cat N vehicle can sometimes be more expensive or complicated, as insurers may view them as higher risk. Also, the Cat N status remains permanently on the vehicle’s history and cannot be removed, which can reduce resale value and affect buyer confidence.
    * MOT and Roadworthiness: A Cat N car does not require a new MOT just because of its status. It must simply pass the standard MOT tests to be road legal.

Tips before buying a Cat N Mazda CX-5:
    - Get a full independent inspection focusing on the areas likely affected by the previous damage (brakes, steering, electrics, bodywork).
    - Obtain a detailed vehicle history check to understand the extent of the damage and repairs.
    - Ask for receipts or proof of quality repairs, especially for safety-critical components.
    - Consider the potential impact on insurance premiums and resale value.
    - Ensure the car has a valid MOT and is roadworthy.

A Cat N Mazda CX-5 has had non-structural damage but remains structurally sound and repairable. While it can be a good value purchase, you should carefully inspect the vehicle and consider possible higher insurance costs and reduced resale value due to its write-off history.

This knowledge will help you make an informed decision and avoid surprises after purchase.
