Your 2013 Honda Civic IX (FK/FN) with a 1.8L (R18) engine and a conventional planetary automatic transmission (not a CVT, usually a 5-speed) requires a partial fluid change.
### 1. Preparation and Draining
1. Warm-up: Warm up the transmission by driving 5-10 km.
2. Access: Raise the vehicle (or use a pit). Remove the undershield (if applicable).
3. Draining: Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission case (it's large, usually a 17mm or square socket). Place a container underneath. * **Important:** The drain plug is held in place by a **magnet**. Clean it of any metal filings.
4. **Drain:** Drain the old oil. Typically, about **2.5 – 3.0 liters** will drain.
### 2. Filling and Oil Type
1. **Oil Type:** Use only genuine Honda ATF DW-1 fluid. This is critical for proper operation of the planetary gearbox.
2. **Filling:** Add fresh oil through the **filler hole**, which is located on the top of the transmission, often **under or near the air cleaner housing**.
### 3. Checking the Level
1. **Dipstick:** Locate the **automatic transmission dipstick** (usually yellow or orange) and reinsert it. 2. **Check:** Warm up the transmission to operating temperature (80C), drive it for a short distance, and check the level with the engine **hot** (the engine should be **off** or **idling**, depending on the Honda model – check your manual, but for the R18 it's usually **off**).
3. **Level:** The level should be between the **HOT** marks or at the top of the dipstick.
### ⚠️ Feature (Partial Change)
Since only part of the oil is drained, it is recommended to perform **2-3 partial changes with low mileage** (100-200 km) between them. This will maximize the fluid in the system without the need for an expensive full-fluid flush.

Hi I wanted to find out how to change the transmission fluid in a 2013 Honda Civic UK, 1800cc planetary automatic, (not cvt). One mechanic told me to check that the car is running in gear n, someone else told me that the engine is off after about a minute of checking. Does anyone know for sure and can share? Thank you very much
