Hi,

I’ve just bought a 2008 Fiat Fiorino with 78k miles on the clock with full service history but there’s a lot of clunky noises coming from the suspension especially when driving along bumpy lanes. The garage where I bought replaced the front o/s shock to get it thro the MOT and now the rear n/s one, but theres little difference, any ideas?

First of all, look at the stabilizer struts and check the arm bushings together.

The clunky noises coming from the suspension of your 2008 Fiat Fiorino, especially on bumpy lanes, despite replacing the front and rear shocks, suggest that the issue might lie with other suspension components rather than the shocks alone. Common causes of clunky suspension noises in your vehicle include:
    - Worn or damaged suspension bushings: Bushings cushion and isolate vibrations and noises between metal parts. When they wear, crack, or become loose, they cause clunks over bumps.
    - Faulty or worn top mounts (strut mounts): These can cause clunking or knocking noises, particularly noticeable when driving over bumps or turning.
    - Loose or worn ball joints and control arms: These play a crucial role in suspension movement and stability; when worn or loose, clunking occurs.
    - Damaged or loose sway bar (anti-roll bar) links or drop links: These often rattle and cause knocking noises during suspension travel.
    - Aged or sagging springs: Uneven ride height or bouncy rides result if springs wear, impacting suspension noise and stability.
    - Installation issues: Sometimes replacement parts like shocks or mounts need to be checked for tightness or correct fitment to eliminate noise.

Since replacing shocks had little effect, a thorough check of these components is recommended. You or a mechanic can do simple bounce tests (pushing down on each corner to listen for noises), visual inspections for damaged bushings, loose bolts, or leaks, and check for worn strut mounts.

Addressing worn suspension bushings, top mounts, or sway bar links often resolves clunky noises effectively. Repairs may cost between £150 and £300 depending on parts and labor.

In summary, the persistent clunks on your Fiorino likely stem from worn or loose suspension parts besides the shocks, such as bushings, mounts, or links. A detailed inspection focusing on these parts should pinpoint the culprit.
