Changing front brake pads on 322 disc version VOLVO XC40 (536)

On a volvo front caliper xc40 on the opposite side to the piston there is a back plate   attached to the caliper instead of a spring. Should this be left in place to locate the 2 rivets on the back of the pads to hold everything steady when fitting new pads?
