Bmw X3 years to avoid BMW 3 Saloon (F30, F80) (03.2011 - 10.2018)
@Tracey O´Connor03.09.2025 11:24@leo3__1AUTODOC expertWhen buying a used BMW X3, it is best to avoid the following models:
- First generation (E83), especially from 2003 to 2006: Frequent problems with the transfer case and its servo drive.
- Second generation (F25): Be careful with N47 diesel engines manufactured before 2011 due to a known problem with the timing chain stretching.
- N54/N55 petrol engines: Early models with these engines had problems with turbines, high-pressure pumps and oil consumption.- @P. D. Specifically, the years 2007, 2013, 2014, 2017, and 2019 have been reported to have more frequent and costly problems. Among these, the 2013 model year stands out as the worst primarily due to a high rate of timing chain guide failures, which can cause engine stalling and expensive repairs.
Common issues across these problematic years include broken timing chain guides, engine overheating due to cooling system failures, oil leaks, faulty window regulators, sunroof rattles or leaks, steering problems, and issues with the EGR system in diesels.
For a more reliable purchase, later models such as 2016 and 2021 are generally safer bets, offering better engineering and fewer reported problems.
So, when shopping for a BMW X3, it's wise to steer clear of the years mentioned and focus on well-maintained models from safer years to avoid unexpected expenses.

Hey folks, I’m thinking of getting a BMW X3. Are there any specific years I should steer clear of? Cheers!
