BMW x3 4x4 warning light (E83) 3.0 Diesel 2004 BMW X3 (E83)

I got an X3 seven months ago and when I started it today the 4ร—4 light came on. It went off again after a couple of miles but now Iโ€™m worried there might be a problem. In the last few months, Iโ€™ve also heard clunking from the back whenever I turn sharply at a low speed, like when turning into a parking space or at an intersection. Thereโ€™s the same sort of clunking when I press the clutch down when driving slowly. I didnโ€™t think too much of it but now Iโ€™m wondering if the noise and the warning light are related and pointing to an issue that I should have looked at.

Anyone had a similar problem with a BMW X3 4ร—4 warning light?

Will the dealer still be able to read the fault code even though the 4ร—4 warning light isnโ€™t on anymore?

Yeah, you can definitely have it checked at the dealer. The fault codes are stored in the ECU memory until cleared. They should be able to tell you what caused the 4x4 warning light in your BMW X3 and if the clunking noise is connected with that.

Had this exact thing on mine back in 2019! The clunking when turning and the 4x4 light are probably related mate. My transfer case actuator motor had a worn gear inside - really common on E83s. The clunking you're hearing is likely the transfer case struggling when you're turning tight, which puts extra strain on it.

@Hadegre Agree with @Carringe1986, dealer can read stored codes no problem. But from what you describe sounds like transfer case actuator to me too. Mine did the clicking noise for months before the lights came on, wish I'd sorted it earlier tbh.

@Hadegre The clunking when you press clutch could also be propshaft centre bearing or guibo wearing out, not just transfer case. Friend had his X3 making similar noises and it was the propshaft.

I'd get it checked soon mate, the transfer case actuator failure can cause the whole thing to lock up if you ignore it too long. You might also notice worse fuel economy if it's stuck in 4wd mode.

@Harry77 Spot on about the fuel - my mpg went properly rubbish before I got mine fixed. Turned out to be that plastic gear inside the actuator that strips its teeth.

@Hadegre Seven months is still pretty new ownership so worth getting checked before it gets worse. The actuator motor is easier to sort than a full transfer case rebuild which is what you'll need if you leave it.

My partner's X3 had this, kept ignoring the occasional light and clunking for ages. Eventually it wouldn't go into gear properly and cost way more to fix. Don't be like us lol.

@fish-chips How much did your actuator replacement set you back if you don't mind me asking? Trying to budget for when mine inevitably goes...

@L.๐Ÿ’‚๐Ÿ’‚๐Ÿ’‚ Yeah could be propshaft but the combination of 4x4 warning light plus clunking on turns is textbook transfer case actuator symptoms. I've seen three mates with E83s have the same thing.

@Hadegre The fact it came on then went off doesn't mean it's sorted unfortunately - that gear inside the actuator probably has a few teeth missing so it only causes problems when it hits those worn spots. Get it scanned and you'll probably see code 5F39 which confirms transfer case actuator.

@Oak33 Exactly, and sometimes you get this rattling noise that matches your speed when the chain inside starts getting slack as well. Mine was doing that clicking sound every time I turned the engine off which was annoying as hell.

@33_lisa That's rough! Yeah these E83s are great but the transfer case is definitely their weak spot, especially on the diesels that get used for towing and stuff.โ€‹โ€‹
