Hello! I’m thinking about getting a BMW 3 Series but I’ve heard some years are dodgy. Can anyone share their thoughts on which models to avoid? I’m particularly curious about reliability issues or any common problems to watch out for. Cheers for any advice you can give!

Hello! The BMW 3 Series G20 (since 2018) is considered reliable, and there are no widely known ‘bad’ model years.
Typical problems and things to look out for:
Electronics and software: The most common problem. There may be iDrive glitches, connection or sensor failures. Tip: Make sure all software updates are installed. Engines (B48, B58): Generally reliable.
    Petrol: Rare increased oil consumption.
B48: Problems with the turbo vestgate (rattling).
Powerful versions: Rare fuel pump failures.
Vibrations and noises: Exhaust rattling, squeaks in the cabin.
Top tip when buying: Look for a car with a full service history and be sure to have a pre-purchase inspection carried out by a BMW specialist. Most problems are rare occurrences rather than widespread failures.

When considering a used BMW 3 Series, some model years and generations are generally more problematic than others due to common reliability issues .

Model Years and Generations to Potentially Avoid:

Fifth Generation (E90/E91/E92/E93: 2006-2011): This generation is frequently cited as having significant reliability issues .

Specific years to avoid: The entire range from 2006 to 2011 is often recommended to steer clear of .

Common problems: Persistent engine problems were widespread, with thousands of complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for models like the 2006 and 2007 . The 2008 model saw further declines in reliability, with electrical issues adding to engine problems . The 2009 and 2010 models continued to experience engine issues, and the 2011 model had a quadrupling of engine complaints .

Additional issues: This generation also suffered from a wide variety of electrical concerns, oil and coolant leaks, VANOS solenoid failure, and high-pressure fuel pump failure, particularly on the N54 turbo engine . The E90 damaged the 3 Series' previous reputation for robust engines .

Fourth Generation (E46: 1999-2005): While beloved for handling and engines, E46 models are prone to rust, especially on the rear subframe, and have notoriously failing coolant systems that can lead to serious engine issues . These models can be expensive to maintain and repair due to their age .

Third Generation (E36: 1992-1998): Similar to the E46, E36 models are significantly affected by corrosion, particularly around the arches and sills, leading to costly repairs. Suspension components also wear out frequently, and coolant systems are a regular source of problems .

F30 Generation (2012-2018) with N20 Engine: While the F30 generation generally improved reliability and didn't suffer from rust like older models, some sources advise avoiding F30s equipped with the N20 engine, despite later revisions . Early F30 models can also suffer from oil leaks around the turbocharger, and some owners have experienced timing chain failure .

General Reliability Considerations for BMW 3 Series:

High Maintenance Costs: BMWs, especially older models, are known for high maintenance and repair costs, which can be "exorbitantly expensive" compared to competitors . This is not a car for those "financially timid" .

    Engine Specifics:

N54 and N55 engines: These engines, found in some 3 Series models, can be reliable if meticulously maintained, but they are still prone to failures that even maintenance might not prevent .

N52 and B58 engines: These are generally considered less prone to issues than the N54/N55 . The E90 with the N52 engine is specifically noted as a reliable option .

Software and Electrical Issues: Electrical faults are common across various models, including issues with the infotainment system and instrument cluster . The infotainment screen, particularly in later models, can be overly complex .

Age and Mileage: Regardless of the specific year, older BMWs with high mileage will likely require frequent repairs due to age . Always consider the car's age, mileage, and drivetrain when assessing reliability .

    Recommendations for More Reliable Models:

E90 with N52 engine: Considered a reliable daily driver .

G-generation (G20) 3 Series (Current generation): Both engine options in the G20 have proven reliable so far .

When buying a used BMW 3 Series, a vehicle with a recorded service history is crucial, as proper maintenance significantly impacts reliability .
